GdubyaSmith 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 Most of the time for me it's Dropper off a Dry....75% of the time it's a size 16-18 Hare's Ear Nymph, Czech Nymph, or Scud...off a Extended Foam Body Mayfly, Foam Spider, or Size 10-12 Woolly Bugger or Worm(silicone sprayed). I find myself changing patterns on the top fly most often but the bottom gets one of those 3 with the occasional size 10, heavy weighted, Bead Head Stonefly making an appearance if the water is fast. If the fish are super picky but taking Dry's I'll switch to a solo size 14-16 Adams or size 18 BWO. The dry's are selected based on what's being taken off the top and the nymph's are sized small enough so the Dry can be used as an indicator. Once I have the combination down and getting bites on either I don't change. I voted Stonefly nymph, it would be the only one I use if restricted to just one, but I feel I have the bases covered where I fish most of the time. eric_sthjrsy 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2013 For a newbie to tying and fishing like myself, I find I can't go wrong with woolybuggers and streamers during the day and then who can resist throwing a dry fly during an evening hatch, although I am not very good at it yet ....and the streamers definatley yield me More and Bigger fish out here in Germany and Slovenia
michaelray 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2013 One of my go to flies to test the waters (troutwise) is a simple hot spot sowbug that I've been tying a number of years. I'll fish it anywhere from a 14 down to an 18 or 20. For smallmouth I'll almost always start with a Whitlock's Near Nuff Sculpin in either Olive or Brown then adjust from there. BBBruce77 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2013 Of late, for me it would be leach patterns but just got back from the Big Horn River where it was mostly very small nymphs. Thus I voted nymphs
