Hans Weilenmann 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2009 ftf, While I have dyed materials in picric acid in the past, the pintail was dyed by a friend in Ireland, Lawrence Finney. Cheers, Hans W
Firetiger 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2009 Picric acid has two important uses: it is an explosive (and thus very hard to get hold of) and turns various grey materials olive. Heron herl treated with the stuff makes the most life like BWO body I know of. CDC dyed with picric acid is also great for imitating various olives. flytyinfreak 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 Picric acid has two important uses: it is an explosive (and thus very hard to get hold of) UH,,,, yah!! At one time many many moons ago I was attending a junior college in Central California studying Electron Microscopy. We use picric acid as an grain etch for metalurgy. One semester i was doing extra credit as a lab assistant, and while cleaning out storge from under a fume hood, I discovered an ancient bottle of picric. complete with crystalized residue!!!! In it's crystal form it's extremely explosive! I notified the lab sup and a whole building was cleared while the hazmat/bomb squad was called in for disposal. One of the guys informed me that the amount of picric (8-10 oz.) could have leveled the the lab!! I think I'll stick with rid dyes!
