Mickalo 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2010 I've been thinking experimenting with some CDC feathers on a few patterns I've been wanting to tie. I've never worked with CDC and was wondering what the difference is between the Goose, Duck and Turkey CDC feathers. They're priced pretty much the same. Is there one type better then another? What do you guys that tie with CDC recommend for starting out ? Thx's Mike
Firetiger 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2010 Goose and Duck feathers differ in size (just the same as the birds do). You might be able to acquire also Swan CDC, which are the biggest. I would be strongly suspicious of Turkey, as it is not waterfowl and has no preen gland. Translation note: the CDC letters stand for Cul De Canard, frenchy for duck's arse. My recommendation would be to buy a small pack of natural brow duck CDC and give it a try. If you become hooked - tying with the stuff is highly addictive - you might consider other kinds, but natural brown is the most important (it closely matches the color of caddis and most mayfly wings). The best sourcing option is a friend that hunts water fowl and would let you pluck the butt end of his ducks. That way you are ensured quality source of all sizes of feathers at a very competitive price Jindra
Mickalo 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2010 Hi Firetiger, yep, the "butt end of the duck" I figured that duck was probably the better of the choices, seems the most commonly used. don't think I'd find any swam around my neck of the woods. Same with water fowl hunter, not around here .... mostly all pheasant bird hunter around here. I got bunches of PT laying around I think I pick up some duck CDC and give a whirl. Looks like some really nice feathers to work with. thank for the info, appreciate it Mike
Firetiger 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2010 You are welcome, just one final piece of advice: tying with CDC is extremely addictive and is known to induce a state of euphoria. A pet goldfish once suicided itself by jumping out of its bowl just to watch me work with the stuff. A female Danica spinner once became pregnant by accidentally falling into my fly box. Tying CDC patterns for a prolonged time can awaken the dark side of dry fly fisherman in you. No genetic Metz or Whiting cape will ever satisfy you again once you develop the craving. So if something unexpected happens - you were warned. You'd best turn back now... Cheers! J.
Mickalo 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2010 :hyst: :hyst: ... too late .... just order some earlier from J.Stockard. Don't have fish but our cat may be a problem, she luvs digging in my material catch-all box below my tying bench. Mike
