Guest Report post Posted July 12, 2010 I am headed to the Rocky Mountain National Park at the end of August which by what I read is a good time for fishing terrestrials. Many that know me know my disdain for all things trout, especially tying dry flies. I welcome the idea of tossing some meatier flies that are much easier to keep afloat!!! I spent several hours over the weekend tying some foam beetles. What is everybody's favorite foam terrestrial patterns? Photos, material list or a link to patterns would be appreciated. freddyg 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2010 This is my favorite pattern for the park in August. I like to glue 2mm white foam on the black foam before I drill the foam. This makes the fly much more visible for us older folks.
NJ All Day 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2010 This is one of my favorite patterns its called the hoppicator because its main use was to use as a indicator for a dry dropper rig. But most of the time i take the mono loops out so its then just a regular hopper http://www.flyfishinglifemag.com/Vol01No01...No01-Hatch.html. Another one of my favorites is the fat albert here http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/detail.cfm. And then some other terrestrials i fish. letumgo 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2010 I have had great success with a foam pattern called a Los Alamos Ant (created by Harrison Steeve's). I posted the pattern a couple years ago, along with the detailed tying instructions (sorry no pictures). I have fished this pattern for a number of years now, and it has proven to be highly effective on smallmouth bass, rock bass, and on trout. If I had to pick a favorite color combination, it would be the black and tan version. My second choice would be the orange and brown version. BigDaddyHub 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 impressive, Mr Tucker....may have to add that one to my smallie box. Getting a few days off next week...may have to hit my old smallie haunts. Have stayed away from the good ones as my knee won't handle the boulders and goat paths this summer....need to get at least one good trip into the back country...this pattern would be the ticket. ozzy1038 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2010 Ants work great in the park. I always have great luck at sprague lake with ants. Black, cinnamon, and flying. Of course beetles and hoppers work as well. I don't or haven't tied any foam ants yet, as I have great success with either dubbed body ants or thread bodied ants. The hackle and a little gink keep them puppys floating good. A few false casts and yout fly is dry and floating high. I used to only tie dubbed ants but am liking the thread bodied ones that I finish with gloss coat. It makes them shiny like the real thing and they don't take on any water. If you are going to fish the Big T in morain park I would suggest a dropper. There are some nice browns hiding down deep that don't like to make an appearance at the top very often. On a non terrestrial note, I have had good success with rusty spinners in late August on the lakes in the park. Good luck, and hopefully you will be enlightened while you are out there and develop an apprecitation for the glorious trout. If I can get my camera fixed I will take a few pics and post them as well as materials.
