fishingbobnelson 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2010 Too many good tyers to stay away. I think I counted right for the last spot with a Bivisible Moose.
flytyman1 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2010 I'd love to join the swap if there are any openings left? I love tying this style fly. If I'm in I'll let you know what pattern I be tying in a few days, Thanks. flytyman1
troutguy 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2010 Thank you all, Bob you are right there are some good tiers here. The swap is closed. For those that asked about patterns and how the style looks, Google these names Harry and Elsie Darbee, Walt and Winnie Dette, Rube Cross, Art Flick, Theodore Gordon or Ed Hewitt. Some modern folks would be Dave Brandt, Ed Van Put or Floyd Franke. The Catskill Fly Fishing Museum is also a good look.

fishingbobnelson 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2010 While I was looking at patterns for this swap I found that most recipes call for size 12 hooks. Is this the common size for the Catskills? I am so used to tying 14 and 16 for the Sierra, I was curious if Northeast Bugs are that much bigger?

Same here, in SD we see mostly 20-16's and the only thing much bigger than that are pmds and they're around a size 14. In the East and North they have a lot of species of mayfly that we don't. Different and larger bugs, but they still have smaller ones too. I'm tying a #16 golden dun for the swap. photo from website.

boynabubble 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2010 Those look great! That is a great book. I have bid on several on ebay. Never got one. It really is a great book. I forgot I had it until I decided to do this swap. I'm glad I joined this one and thanks for hosting. This was my first time sitting down and seriously trying to tie some Catskill style dries and it was a lot of fun. They were a little challenging but I hope they turned out true to form. It was a real treat to look into the stories behind the Catskill dries and the names and history that came out of the region.
