Sons and Daughters in the Armed Forces

Recommended Posts

Everything has changed since I originally posted here. My son was told he was probably going to Qatar. He found out last week that he will be leaving for Tikrit (?) Iraq the 15th of January and will be back home the 15th of May. His wife has already laid down the law. For those 4 months he is not to leave the base. His squadron is in kind of a mop up support role. I guess it's like a base operations role .. passenger manifests, load configurations and the like. January will be here too soon and May won't be soon enough.

Another change. He is now shipping out about the 5th of January and will be an escort in convoys. Why in the hell they have ANG pulling duties like that is beyond me. I guess it's just another sign of how totally messed up this situation is getting. :wallbash:

Well as others my son decided to join the service and went in the Army (tried to get him to go Air Force like his Dad but no) and is in basic training right now and then on to advanced training learning to drive a tank. He already knows that he's gonna go to the sandbox and is prepared for it. He just finally had with dead end jobs and no money and really sat down with Dad and asked if he was doing right. I told him the positives and negatives of Military Service and he made his choice. I'm proud of him but miss my fishing partner, after basic he gets to come home for Christmas and our water here is all frozen.

Best of luck to your son, Mike. Get plenty of tying materials; it helps with the long nights when you can't sleep.

Be ready for the telephone calls or emails your son will surely send, listen (or read) carefully, and reply with an upbeat attitude (you may have to fake it). There are many events in our children's lives that put us to the test; few are as demanding as having them deploy. If you ever need to share the load, send me a PM.

Thanks Russ. You'd think that after my time in service I'd come to expect this mess. The deployment has at least 5 changes in it since the word first came down. It has nothing but fiasco written all over it. The squadron assignment has now gone back to the specialities they are assigned but it's still a mess. They deal with cargo and passengers and that's what they know. But .. my son told me their concern now is that if something should break out on the base they're at, they have no training on what to do. He assured me it's a good bunch of guys he'll be with. That may be true .. it's the leadership I worry about. It doesn't seem like the higher-ups in his bunch can get out of their own way. I try to be supportive but this has me so pi$$ed off. Good thing I have a small fly shop worth of supplies in my tying room. I see way too many sleepless nights ahead. Plus .. I have 3 grand-kids that are going to need Papa.

May the good Lord look after & protect all the sons & daughters in the military no matter where in the world they may be!

My one son is in the Navy, currently assigned to submarine duty & stationed at Pearl Harbor, HI

He's been in for 3 years, and wants to make it a career.

May the Good Lord bring all your sons and Daughters home safe and uninjured from the fighting in Europe.

I served 23 years in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps and know well the trials of service overseas.

God Bless all who serve.

May she continue to serve with honor and be home soon. Lost a dear friend in Afghanistan last month; two fraternity brothers 6 months ago; two highschool classmates in Iraq in Jan of '08; and a old college roommate the week before Thanksgiving in 07. Life's tough. It would be tougher without the dedicated men and women giving thier lives for freedom. Tyrants be damned!
