FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2012 Well the season opened on the weekend, finally! I left it until now to start scouting and fly testing, but should have a few more weeks of steelhead action. I only managed to land one yesterday, got my ass kicked by a couple of larger ones, my buddy managed a huge male and i landed smallest of the day. The best part of the day was figuring out they wanted meat, larger flies. I spent a good couple of hours messing about with smaller patterns, then put on an intruder and within 5 casts the action begun. So i am really happy with some of my ties i had done during winter, how they swam, sink rates etc. So i guess back to the water tomorrow? I have a score to settle with a very thick steel
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted May 8, 2012 I am having a bonanza with the intruders i have tied, the steelhead really like to smack them hard 3 more today plus a big sucker. Got a pic of one quickly. Still looking for something big, lets see what i can do in the next few weeks!
Piker20 0 Report post Posted May 8, 2012 Thats a very good looking fish. Are the steelhead that colour straight from salt or do they colour up a bit once in fresh water?
Wavey1988 0 Report post Posted May 8, 2012 Tough day today, overcast, the lake was flooded too, managed to winkle a few out European Perch was all I had to fly. I had a few more to float fished bait though And this is what it was like
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2012 Thats a very good looking fish. Are the steelhead that colour straight from salt or do they colour up a bit once in fresh water? Usually the fresh fish are completely chrome, once they have spent a bit of time in the river they take up coloration. Quite interesting, they are sometimes very difficult to see and you can sit on the bank staring at a run for half an hour before you notice some grey smudges. Piker20 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2012 Sounds like the sea trout here. The first time I fished a new spot last year I waded out past the fish. They just seem to sit in knee deep water and you can't see a thing till they hit the fly. Awesome fishing.
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2012 1 more, sorry the fish was all flopping around and going crazy, really bad photo LOL - i just wanted to get him back asap, not very big but gave a good fight - went way downstream.
