Tier Gone Mad 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2011 Good day to All, Just wondering if you had a favorite Bluegill pattern that's your "go to one" when those "Little Fighters" are your target for the day? One of the other fly fishing forums I used to be a part of I asked this same question & it turned out to be one of the highest grossing reply questions they ever had on their site. If you are willing to share your pattern I'd love to see what other Fly Fisherman reach for when it's time to fill the bucket. bluegill576 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2011 Oooooo, picking a favorite is going to be hard. I love so many of them! my favorite to fish is probably a popper because you can see them come up and smash it, but my most productive fly for the big'uns has to be this orange carp fly. My biggest bluegill on it was a 1.5lb bluegill. It's nice and buggy looking and it has some weight on it so it can get down to the big ones lying on the bottom. TheCream 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2011 I could more or less "go to war" on gills with 2 flies: -yellow/black popper -generic black nymph I tie The generic nymph I tie is the following recipe: -hook: #8-10 2X long nymph hook -bead head -tail: black rabbit -abdomen: black vinyl d-rib -wingcase: black deer hair -thorax: black ice dub Another option is the infamous green weenie. I have slayed plenty of gills on that.
hambone870 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2011 Poppers and top waters are so much fun. I was teaching my son to fly fish this last year for bluegills and we used a brassie with a bacon tail... We had a good day! Haha. It is a species I admittedly should spend a bit more time targeting.
ditz2 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2011 Yellow craft foam spider on a #10 aberdeen. Sometimes I have to drop down to a #14 yellow spider. For a sinker I use a #10 McGinty that is black and chart. with a red hair tail and only a hackle and no wings. Luv those sunfish.

Will K 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2011 A White or Yellow popper is just crazy fun on the sunnies. For the big fatties... Man, I'd err to a dragonfly or damsel fly nymph.
