It may be strange but I collect fly fishing traditions! Let me explain. Some places have developed unique fly fishing techniques. Like the fishing of North Country Spiders on the rivers of northern England (the tradition I come from). I like to go to places with these unique traditions and fish that way, to try to understand what they did there and why.

Have fished:

Spiders all across Northern England,

Loch style wet flies on the Scottish lochs

Bustad flies on the Eden,

Spey flies on the Spey,

Dry flies on the English chalk streams,

Italian casting in Umbria on the Nera,

Bumbles on the Derbyshire Wye.

Yet to do.

Catskill flies (wet and dry) in the Catskills,

CdL flies in the Pyrenees Mountains,

Czech and Polish nymphs in their respective places,

Dee flies on the River Dee.

Irish traditional patterns on the Irish Loughs

There are more but that's the top of the list. (Writing that list has given me an idea for a project over the winter that may keep me going). My usual answer to the question "where do you fish?" Is "anywhere they will let me". An exploration of salt water fly fishing would be interesting but doesn't hold huge attraction to me.

Cheers,

C.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with a bucket list of places to fish.

Mikechell, I'm not sure there is any more water for you to fish. It appears you have found it already.

Crachkaig, I really like the idea of fishing to the style of the area you are visiting. It keeps you open to learning new thing from new people. It also gives you an excuse to buy more materials to tie more flies. Can't think of a better reason than that. I will have to try that explanation on my wife.

Wow.

so far:

Pennsylvania

Maine

New York

Nevada

New Mexico

Arizona

Alaska

Virginia

North Carolina

Florida

California

Alabama

Georgia

New Brunswick

Cuba (Gitmo)

all over the Caribbean

Japan

Ireland

several other places in Europe - some we probably shouldn't have so I won't say or can't remember

Bucket List:

I don't know.

I have very little desire to leave the USA at all anymore, and I doubt I'll ever have the finances to do so.

Maybe far northern Canada for giant arctic char

Saskatchewan for big pike

Realistically, I'd like to go back to the sandhill lakes in northern Florida for monster bluegills

someplace in the upper midwest for big hybrid stripers

and most of all continue to have the opportunity to fish Lake Erie on my Kayak a couple times a year for bass, brown trout, and steelhead.

Well, I guess I have the shortest list of places that I have fished and also the easiest to remember:

Virginia.

I have been over much of the state trying to catch whatever I can, but there is still a lot of water for me to see.

My list if I could go anywhere to fish would possibly be the Catskills, a few places in the west up in the mountains, New England for big brookies, and a couple places in Europe.

I am just a simple guy that doesn't require much, so chasing little brookies in my home state and getting into a few small mouths in the New River seems to keep me satisfied...

an afterthought, I have ventured into North Carolina a couple times while fishing the New River because around the NC-VA border the river winds and twists so much that either license is honored there.
