but the "palmered" flies most likely predate the griffiths gnat

Traditionally in England the same role your fly plays is covered with the Double Badger. Recently I started tying this variation.

I like that one! Will tie up some of those to test out for sure

Please let me know how you get on with them. A coat of varnish on tag and head makes the fly much more durable. The "red" here is UTC Fl Fire Orange.
