thursthouse 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2015 Are there actually contests? I haven't seen one posted since I joined (Only contest I'd have a chance at winning would be an ugly fly contest). Just curious..
Bugsy 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2015 Up until about five years ago, FTF hosted an annual Fly Tier of the Year (FTOTY) contest with multiple categories. In more recent years, I've seen some contests hosted by FTF members or links from other sites.
shoebop 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2015 Yes there have been a couple of contests but there aren't too many. Time investment for the contest meister would be my guess as to why there aren't many.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2015 I think the other issue is incentives to take part. Is there a prize? Who provides a prize? Do the beginners even try to enter if they perceive 'pro' tiers are in?
vicrider 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 Now that you bring that up I might just look to see what I could put up for prizes and start a contest. Different categories, different prizes, maybe one for novice tyers with less than 6 months experience. Sounds fun and when I owned a bait shop up north I ran a lot of contests out of the shop. Never a tournament but contests running for a specified length of time for different fish and times of year. Thinking more about this if I was able to actually do any real fishing I could get some nice flies and bugs this way but since I'm pretty much out of that game I would make it clear flies go to Healing Waters or Casting for Recovery. flytire 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 I don't really see the need for contests there is another forum site that has a contest and it only draws 2-4 tyers at most do you really need a prize for a contest? winning the contest should be prize enough
mikechell 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 ... maybe one for novice tyers with less than 6 months experience. Playing "devil's advocate" ... The possible problems with this will depend on your "prize". We all want to think we know other people online ... but of course, we don't, really. Your only proof of someone's experience is their own input. If the prize is truly worth entering for, a 20 year tier might claim to have less than 6 months to win it. We have a ton of members who've never, or rarely posted. Unless you rule out anyone with say, fewer than 100 post (example), you couldn't be sure ... even then, it could be "iffy". heavynets 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 The FFF will give you an award if it meets their criteria. http://www.fedflyfishers.org/Tying/FlyTyingSkillsAwardsProgram/tabid/610/Default.aspx
flytire 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 ruling out anyone with less than some predetermined number of posts wouldn't really solve anything except the contest would be biased to tyers who don't have that many posts any tyer could cheat and buy a fly at the local fly shop and enter it into a contest the forum allows anybody with any amount of posts to participate in swaps so why not a contest? mikechell 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 I don't really see the need for contests the forum allows anybody with any amount of posts to participate in swaps so why not a contest? You're contradicting yourself. I am not arguing FOR or AGAINST contest, rather arguing against "discriminatory" rules. You can't have a contest for "people with less than 6 months" if you can't prove they really are novices. I don't see anything wrong with contests. If someone has something worth giving away, and wants some new fly ideas ... what better way to trade than to do a contest? Among the options is how to judge the contestant's flies: "prize giver's" opinion of which fly is best ... or a forum vote system.
flytire 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 just pointing out that the forum allows anybody to participate in a swap regardless of post count so why limit post counts for a contest I'm still not in favor of contests
shoebop 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 Verification (of anything) would be a problem no matter what. But I have an idea for a contest that might solve many of the issues. My idea for a contest would be more of a photo (of their fly) contest. No flies sent to anyone. Just enter your photo of your fly (with very specific guidelines) with an identifying piece of info in the photo or a separate photo to identify that the photo and fly is yours. That's it! Open it up to voting online and after a reasonable time announce the winner. Best fly/photo combination. No prizes. Just a winner.
