Fly Tying
Hatchet Jack

In search of a dry fly pattern (?)

Recommended Posts

The other night I was up late browsing various fly tying sites

and I found a rather striking dry fly. I thought I had bookmarked it,

but alas, not to be. Don't even remember its name.

It had a hair fibre tail, a turkey or goose biot abdomen, then some peacock

herl, hackle, and perhaps upright wings of deer hair? I know, I've got the basics

but would sure like to see the real deal again, thanks.

You don't state the style of the fly, but your description has much in common with the H&L Variant.

That's what I thought of. I'm tying them for the mayfly swap on the swap board. My pictures didn't come out as good with attempt at bottom lighting.

Bugsy, did you epoxy or UV you bodies? I haven't but yours have a nice sheen. I do put CA under wraps of herl stem to strengthen them but nothing on top.

And is that your answer Hatchet Jack?

By the way, I used calf tail for tail and wings as original pattern called for. A little wilder looking than deer hair but kind of idea on this fly.

Those flies were tied about 10 years ago, so I can't be sure. Possibly an application of ZAP(?) CA over top, since I did do that for a while. Definitely something shiny on there, and it's definitely not UV resin.

Bugsy & vicrider, that's it!

It really is a beautiful fly & probably floats quite well.

Thanks to all for your responses.

Time to go back to the vice, oh drat laugh.png
