Mop Fly Variant

You know fellas they got gobs of this stuff in the yarn shelves too. Mostly pastel colors but I'm not sure how to effectively "bob" the end to secure and nice roundness yet....

Tried some wit hackle and "paint" made eyes....

Egg Sucking Mop Leach

 

A pattern for Salmon and Trout where Salmon run.

• Hook #2 Gami SP11-3L3H
• Body/Egg Mop (dark olive/chartreuse)
• .025 lead secured to top of hook, 4 lengths twisted

  

The body mop goes on nice and full and can be trimmed as shown.

Alevin Salmon Mop

 

A pattern for Salmon and Trout where Salmon run.

For about a month the Alevin (Juvenile fish) remain hidden in their gravel nest.

They feed on their yolk sac also known as "lunch bags".

After the lunch bag is gone they are fry and begin to hunt food for themselves.

• Hook Sz 4 Mustad #31250
• Egg Sack Orange Mop
• .025 lead secured to top of hook, 4 lengths twisted
• Body E-Z Braid Small Pearl
• BT Olive/White

Better deal with the mop than mine but they got battle scars! Alevins .....I'm having trouble finding "right colors" on mops/gloves.....

Long time ago they had where ereyone was from under username. Wish they would put that back in play. Lots better to know where youse guys are from on this stuff! Can only dream about salmon fishing.

I was having trouble too until I found them on e-bay, search mop slipper.

They come in many colors from China and take 2-4 weeks.

I'm from Delaware so closest is the great lakes.

Fshng2 very nice pattern. No salmon here in SC! You inspired me to try your pattern, no orange mop (only blue and green locally) tied it as a keel fly instead. Thanks for the great photos.

Great idea with the keel hook and weighted egg sac, what's the sac made with?

Fshng2, Thanks. The sac is tubing from a dollar tree Halloween headband. Weight is two metal beads from the Wallyword bead section. Tubing is larger than most Mylar that I've used but performs in much the same way. Based on lessons learned from my keel frog bass fly, I now put a thin cost of UV resin over the mesh to keep from losing the beads after the first strike.

Just thinkin, could you string the beads on mono and secure mono at both ends to keep from loosing the beads?

Fshng2, funny you mention that, I was considering that today. I was thinking about doing an elongated egg sack over the beads tied in that way as another variation for your alevin fly. But it certainty would work on the other keel patterns I tie. Time to get back to the vice and try it!

Here is a free strung keel, 2 beads on mono, under the antron, per your suggestion. Not sure how the egg yarn will hold up but I'll fish it and see. Next will be with an olive zonker on top instead of buck tail.
