I'm not gonna get into the discussion part here again, said I had said my piece but do want to point out one thing I think some may not know. Mike is using a go-pro camera. I filmed on a go pro myself for a few years and for those that have not filmed on one, because of the curved lens there is a big difference in depth perception because of the fish eye lens. What looks like an object is 40' from you on go pro video is in reality closer to 10-15ft from you. So those boats that look like they are about 30ft from Mike are actually with in 10ft most likely.

 

That's one thing I always laughed above on my fishing videos when I filmed with my go pro, my casts on video made me look like Lefty bombing out 120' casts when in reality they were only 35' casts

First of all ... thank you, Steve. If I'd have leveled my fly rod towards them, I'd have hit the drivers of those first two boats. They weren't 10 ft from me, they were less than 5 ft.

 

Second of all ... No WAY, man !!! I really AM fishing 120 feet from my boat on my fishing videos.

Mike is not wrong that those people were aholes, but, precisely because you can’t fix stupid, why put yourself within 10 ft. of them in such narrow channel?

It's very shallow, as you can see the bottom through the coffee colored water.

And I was stuck in an area I couldn't readily get out of.

 

 

You can see, there wasn't much room for them to maneuver.

 

The first boat did, indeed, slow down. My main hatred for them was just the open pipes and painfully loud noise.

That second boat ... well ... as I stated, they can go to sleep knowing someone in this world truly hates them.

I looked at that vid three times and all three times the powered boats came and put themselves in a close to collision position. The mikechell boat was already there and apparently non-powered.

Whoa I didn't want to start hatred. No need to suggest I'm a problem or an inconsiderate idiot or for anybody to get hot under the collar and start digging their heels in.

 

I was not aware that the lens makes objects appear further away then they actually are because to me they all look like there is more then enough room for everybody. If they are a fishing rods length away then they are wrong. Sorry to get everybody's angst up.

All of this reminds me why I think that a recreational boat operators license is a good idea, especially one that can be revoked/suspended.

 

I've launched at the ramp right there a couple of times. That area can be a zoo on the weekends. I expect that's one of the reasons Mike was in a side channel headed towards backwater. I'd do the same.

 

I like to fish the freshwater side of the Everglades. This time of year unless you are in a yak or on an airboat you are stuck in the actual canals. Leaving your truck at the more remote ramps can be dicey at best (though it's gotten better). That means some boats are running 10-20 miles of canal to get to where they want to be. It's not like the saltwater side where you can really get away from everyone. I like to get away from people as best as I can so I'll run to do so. This is dispite the fact that I can catch just as well 20ft away from the ramp. When the Glades are "hot" it gets crowded and you can have a boat every few hundred yards for the first 5 miles coming from the ramp. That first five miles could take an hour at idle speed. If I'm in a wider canal I don't have a problem with staying on plane, however I'll look at a boat and the people on it. What kind of boat is it? How much free board does it have? Are there kids (or pets)? Are people standing? Just how close to the bank are they? If I don't see anything I don't like I'll stay on plane but I'll move as far towards the other bank as is safe then I'll open up the throttle and put the bow down to minimize my wake. In a narrower canal I plan on coming off unless they wave me through. Myself I almost always wave boats through (I just want them gone), especially faster sleeker hulls. They don'y make much more than a big ripple on plane (see, bass-car has it's good points!). I have very little free board and I just turn the bow into the wake. Now does it bug me when a boat just blows by without a by your leave, yeah it pretty rude and can be dangerous if I'm not ready for it. What I hate more than anything though is someone with a bay boat with an i/o that slows down just below planing speed. That creates the largest wake possible. When I come off plane I'll keep a reasonable wake until I'm about 60-50 yards away and then I come to an idle for a few yards to completely drop my wake before giving it just a little throttle. Also I'll throttle back some far away enough on approach so the other boat can hear me drop engine rpm, that way they can give me a pass and I have enough space to really get back up on plane all the way. If I don't have that space when they wave I drop down anyway.

 

I don't hate people in general, but I get on the water to get away from everyone. If I don't see but one or two boats all day and they are just close enough to signal with something bright I'm happy. Unfortunately right now we have the least amount of people on the water that we will ever see again in our lives. Enjoy it while you can....

when i was a lot younger, I waded lake edges with a fly rod and a couple times had high speed Bass Boats or maybe Jet Boats swamp my waders, knocked off my feet once and I doubt the operators ever saw me. I have no idea if they were on plane or over plane or under plane, both came around points and neither slowed or looked back. After the third near miss I quit using those ACOE lakes, I don't guess that was fair to me, but in general boaters have more money than other users and thus more power in setting rules. .

Back in RI, I watched a couple swimming across a river when a speed boat?/skiboat? came around a bend and crossed right where they were, they both dived so close to collision time that until the boat was long gone and they returned to the surface, I was unsure of their safety. That boat driver had no idea those kids were there, if I hadn't seen them dive in, I would not have known they were there.

Kinda why I hate the boats more than the people, if the boat can legally use a body of water and run at speeds (15mph or 150mph doesn't matter a lot if you are the one getting smashed) then people will run at those speeds and feel they are right in doing so.

Keeping the powered boats only in marked channels or 300' off the shore line would go a ways to making me like boats better.

The thought that it's "the boat's" fault, and not the person driving it ... makes no sense to me.

 

In that train of thought, it's the dishes that are making people fat ... not the people eating. If the dishes were smaller, then the people wouldn't eat as much.

 

If I am on the lake, and someone goes by 50 yards away, doing 70+ MPH ... no problem. When they go by within feet of my boat, then I have a problem.

Several years ago, I had a set skier go by twice within casting distance of me. First time, I waved him away. Second time, I flipped him off.

The third time, I cast across his bow. I was fishing a big top water lure (baitcaster and braided line). The line drug across his arms and chest and cut him. Fortunately for him, the lure flipped out and away from him. When he started yelling about calling the cops, I said, "Go ahead. You're in the wrong, and the cuts only prove you were too close to me."

 

He cussed me out and took off. Funny ... I never saw that particular guy in my area again.

 

If I'd had the same set up this day, I wouldn't have had to cast. I could've just reached out an hooked the second operator. I almost did it with the fly rod ... but I was afraid I'd break it.

High powered boats can be regulated off the water or restricted, regulations against stupidity, not so much.

If boats capable of leaving a dangerous wake are not allowed then the stupid people that use dangerous wakes will not be there....never mind.

I don't need to fish those lakes anyway.

This is going to turn in to my personal rant thread. Another reason why I hate people presented today.

Background: When I am fishing the river, I often find plastic barrels. Most are "ex-floats" from busted up piers. When I can, I bring 'em home. I had a large blue one, and cut off one end to make a yard waste barrel out of it.

 

I used it yesterday, filled it with palmetto leaves from a corner bush. It was there, waiting for pick up when I got home from work. Took a short nap.

 

Went out to retrieve the empty barrels ... and some one had stolen it. It didn't cost me anything, so I am not out any money. But I still feel ... violated.

 

I REALLY hate people !!!
