I tried a trick suggested by Sandan and now I really like the the way my hackles are looking. Will the fish notice? I doubt it. Will the flies act better on the water? Float longer? Maybe. The real difference is that, I think they look better and that's the reason I'm doing this exercise. Thanks again Sandan.

Well tied flies, Mark.

I really like ants, I just don't usually fish them. There was one day, on the St. Johns River, when little floating ants were the only thing I could get a hit on. They wouldn't touch anything else I threw at them, but they'd make a wake from 3 feet away to hit an ant.

Thanks Mike, I'm pretty excited about my trip to the lower 48 this summer. I'm going to keep chucking bugs at fish till they're all wet.

The rivers up here are always full of spiders that float in the surface film and these ants are a pretty good representation of floating spiders. The graying and trout will gobble them up.

Cheers.

My Hobby Room!

post-54459-0-10721800-1550703244_thumb.jpg

Six months ago yuou could not even see the floor, let alone find any thing. So time for a massive organization.

Start with the closet

post-54459-0-16730400-1550701486_thumb.jpg

This stuff still has to be sorted, but it was the way I kept most of my materials

post-54459-0-83622400-1550701629_thumb.jpg

Took out the 10 foot closte rod and bought 2 hotel baggage carts, one for hunting, one for fishing. Much easier to sort and easily find stuff

Materials Cabinit

Everything sorted, labeled, entered in the laptop, and printed hard copy

Actual Desk

post-54459-0-48609500-1550703314_thumb.jpg

Took a sheet of 3/4 in birch ply, ripped her in half, screwed, glued and varathaned. Rests on 2 Lee Valley cast legs. The hook bank and side and top storage storage came later (not varathaned}

Hook Bank

post-54459-0-69872000-1550703599_thumb.jpg

My most commonly used hooks, Mustad, Tiemco, Diachi, Partridge, Galec Supreme. Thought when I built it that I could even store beads her and I can't even get all my hooks in!

All hooks are labeled, entered in the laptop, and printed hard copy

Reloading Bench:

post-54459-0-83261500-1550707959_thumb.jpg

Now this is interesting, its actually my first fly tying bench that my dad and I built when I was about 10 years old. Guess I outgrew it! Now repurposed into loading bullets

Book Shelf

post-54459-0-35476800-1550705270_thumb.jpg

The complete tour and we are back to the closet. Biggest hastle was the computerization and labelling. But I'm Glad its done OR almost done

AND NOW FOR MY FIRST FLY IN OVER # YEARS. I basically gave it up when I was diagnosed with macular degeneration. It is possible but painfully slow. This bug took me over an hour to tie. Keep on trucking

I consider myself a beginner even though I've been tying ugly flies off and on for over 30 years. Just got back to tying after a very lengthy lay off and I have been on a perdigon kick for the past month. Starting to get the hang of it and ready to get on the water and give some of them a try. I've also been off the water for a couple of years due to some issues with my legs, so starting to tie again is getting me charged up.

Just some phone picks.

More from the Orvis index.

The last of the ants.

DSCF3383-XL.jpg

Brown Flying Ant

Next the Caddises

DSCF3386-XL.jpg

Dark Dun Fluttering Caddis The wing looks darker in person, might retie this with the darkest dun I can find.

DSCF3389-XL.jpg

Light Dun Fluttering Caddis

DSCF3396-XL.jpg

This was supposed to be the Light Shad Fluttering Caddis but I tied it with Dun and Grizzly instead of Ginger and Grizzly (oops) It's such a pretty fly I had to show it.

DSCF3400-XL.jpg

This is the Light Shad Fluttering Caddis tied with the correct feathers.

DSCF3403-XL.jpg

Small Brown Fluttering Caddis

Tomorrow I finish the caddises and go to the midges.
