December Flies From The Vise

Recommended Posts

Just some backswimmers I tied up last night. The lighter one (weighted with lead) seems to work better for me in my local. Excellent early spring and late fall flys.

Found this version on Rob Denson’s site. Beefed up the head a bit as I want this to stay on top in some pretty rough water.

tail - yarn orange

rib - small wire copper

body - dubbing black claret

body hackle - dyed claret (1 Tbs Rit Wine/1 cup water)

shoulder hackle - mottled hen

head - deer hair dyed claret

Regards,

Scott

Another nymph from the Orvis Index.

DSCF4366-XL.jpg

Perla.

This pattern calls for a blend of yellow and amber African goat fur for dubbing. For some reason I couldn't find my yellow and amber African Goat fur to blend so I substituted red fox and amber poly dubbing. Please excuse the departure from the original.smile.png

Now that my pictures are getting better I have noticed a couple of things. One thing I noticed is, as the pictures get better the flies look worse. You can see every thread out of place and every wild feather fiber. Becoming a better photographer makes you a better tier.

Too late, I noticed that the hook gap on this fly is probably too big for this fly. Maybe it will help keep smaller trout off of this one.

Found this seatrout fly on Rob Densons site. Havent used bronze mallard in a while and now I remember why - scarce, expensive and unruly; the perfect material.

hook WFC Model 6 #8

thread - Danville 6/0 black

tail - bronze mallard

rib - small wire gold

body - tinsel holo gold

body hackle - hot orange

wing/cloak - bronze mallard

collar hackle - hen grizzly dyed Silver Doctor Blue I2 packs Koolaid Ice Blue Raspberry/1 cup water)

Riachs Mill Dabbler II

Got feedback on a U.K. site from the originator of the pattern with some suggestions that I incorporated here - switched to red hackle, dispersed the bronze mallard cloak and swapped out the grizzly hen for Mearns Quail, as well.

Cool photo Kimo. Is that nymph (above) a focus stack? It must be. Do you use Helicon software? Just curious. I have Helicon and ZereneStacker. Play with both. Or some other way?

Yes, it is a focus stack of 6 photos. No software other than Photoshop. No special hardware other than a macro lens and camera stand.
