I had been aware of this technique and had been toying with trying it. My first three attempts are below. In the first two I did not go far enough into the bend before doing the hackle. As an afterthought, one of the the things I noticed about Christie's flies is that he uses multiple types of dubbings - in different colors - and the dubbing looks a bit scruffy (deliberatly so in my opinion) so I tried to imitate that.
