Silver,

I made a similar post the other day and someone asked why does Amazon and the authors give away free stuff.  Frankly I have no answer other than to just lure you to their site hoping you will find other books to buy.  You have any thoughts as to why they do it?

I've been surprised that in the last week or two they have really increased the quantity and quality of the free ones.  In the past, most of what they offered wasn't worth reading.

I don't know why Amazon can offer these books for free. One reason amazon does it is to sell Kindles but why the authors allow it, I have no clue. Maybe Amazon has a deal with the publishers to allow Amazon ot offer these books for free in exchange for something else Amazon does for them. Kind of a Quid pro quo agreement.

My guess is that distributing free books helps the author because the book will then rise in the Amazon rankings and increase it's popularity, maybe also garner some good reviews. Just a guess.

That's exactly it. I've self-published a few books on running and when I was researching marketing strategies, this came up quite often.

Maybe for some.  However a lot of their free books, the author is either dead or long retired.

Yes, but the publisher might still own the rights to the book. It doesn't become public domain until either 70 years after the author has died or 95 years after publication, depending on the circumstances.

Not quite a kindle book, but free on Amazon Prime Video, "Trout Grass," about 45 minutes long...  Not a "how to," more of a "how wow." Far, far too sentimental for some; just right for others.
