Fly Tying

Poul had many different/ out of the norm, techniques

We all have regrets in life, and one of mine is the fact I was never able to take Poul up on several invitations to spend some time with him at his home and do some tying together.

Oh well...it is what it is.

There may be other methods described in other old texts, but the way it is described by Blacker is you stack your slips for each half of the wing (far side and near side) then you tie in the stack for the far side, secure it, then the stack for the near side. Then you can run the wing between your fingers and get the fibers to "mix" together. So, the mixing isn't really happening until it's on the hook and the slips are tied in independently rather than at once like you would for a winged wet. Happy to help clarify!

That put the icing on the cake

I was lucky enough to tie with him. We had him at one of our shows and I was his escort all weekend so I took advantage

This particular pattern I got from Poul Jorgensen and his stacked wing procedure and technique is to stack, comb out then mount But note that I’m using Schlappen in this case. Poul always combed out his wings b4 mounting, whether it was Schlappen, goose shoulder, or died turkey

Yeah, I’ll post a video later tonight

Very nice, I don't have time to look at it now, packing for the moose/grayling trip. I will check it out when I get back though. Thank you.

I checked out Ronn Lucas' site and for my first foray into Classic salmon patterns took his advice and started out easy. From tutorial #1 a couple of RAT style flies. Substitutions made for some materials. I'm liking the beginning of this journey.

Good looking flies Sandan. Can't beat Ronn's advice either.

Thanks SalarMan. I like his site. The tutorials are pretty good. Each one builds on the one before it.
