Really diggin' the proportions on that tye.

Plenty of "breathing room" relative the more bugger-esque type notions of the idea.  Saved and labeled in a file.  Thanx!

This is what happens when people get the idea that anyone can mix a decent dubbing...

Don’t mind the hook choices. Opinions welcome otherwise.

Looks good, can't tell it there are two different mixes, but the first one seems to have more guard hairs mixed in, so it looks buggier/better, IMO.  May be just the addition of the tinsel that makes them appear different.  Maybe a touch darker, for my flies.    What all's in there?

Take a piece of velcro to the dubbing to thin it out a bit and make it even more scraggly.  That done, it will trap some small air bubbles and provide some movement that will  help sell it to the fish -- if not to the fly tying hall of fame.  I have an emerger pattern that like that and it has duped trout for years.  The more I use it, the more ratty and effective it is.

Well since I have joined this forum I have always found SBPatt Muddler style flies amazing and have wanted to give it a shot. My first attempt I really think that the hair he uses makes a difference. I used some elk hair that I had on hand. Any advice is welcome!

Thread: UTC 140 Black

Christian,

Nicely shaped head, very buggy; it’ll make a good general attractor (the westslope cutts I fish for love orange) or an October Caddis (maybe downsize to a shorter shank hook).

Regards,
Scott

Thank! And I’ll give the shorter shank a try, I don’t tie many of these but I had to give it a shot, was fun to tie for sure!

GOLDEN ACE- VARIANT.  It's winter, time to try new things-

Lately I've been using the really small iridescent white/gold tipped feathers off a Starling skin for cheeks in place of Jungle Cock.  On certain patterns they look really nice.  These are a little to far back from the head.   The Starling has a pretty tight curve to the stem so they don't really like to lay flat and it's a fight to keep them in place.  If anyone has solved this problem I would love some advise.  Also I only had small size Mylar on hand and this fly calls for wider tinsel because of the wire.

HOOK:  SIZE 10 1X STANDARD NYMPH

THREAD:  #70 OLIVE

ABDOMEN/BODY: WOUND MARABOU - YELLOW

RIB: SMALL MYLAR TINSEL -PEAR OVER WRAPPED WITH FINE GOLD WIRE

UNDER WING: MARABOU - YELLOW

WING: WOOD DUCK - LEMON

BEARD: GUINIE HEN – BLUE

CHEEKS: STARLING NECK

HEAD: OLIVE THREAD

About two months into my newfound *hobby*, and I'm feeling really good about this one. This is the first time I've spun a deer hair head that-- at this point in my skill-building-- I feel really good about.
