A sunfish game changer.  One really tiny, the other a little larger.

Toothy

You have been posting a terrific series of Hendricksons!  I hope you have a terrific local hatch. Over the years I hit the peak hatch twice. It was a memorable experience.

Hi Tom,

Thanks! During last spring’s sheltering in place order my dental office was closed and I was able experience the magic of the Hendrickson hatch for about a month on the Farmington river. Like clock work, if the temperature hit 50° they would start hatching around 2:30 pm and the fish just went berserk and gorged themselves on Hendricksons.
Prior to last spring I hadn’t had much success hitting the Hendrickson hatch with a few good days here and there, because I was always busy in the office at the critical time. Guessing I won’t have another spring like the last one until retirement!

Getting away from Harry Murray’s original intention for this fly - a Quill Gordon imitation (sorta), but it’s a good foundation to play with.  Tried it with natural deer hair and wasn’t thrilled with the results so I tried a few different dyed pieces; this shade was what I was looking for.  Unfortunately, I’ve been doing some experimenting and didn’t keep good notes on the mixture; pretty sure these amounts are correct. Also, this was a piece of tan pronghorn, not white, so the color is a a bit darker; I left it in the dye bath for about an hour.

hook - WFC Model 6 #8
thread - Uni 8/0 camel
tail - bleached moose body hair
rib - x-small wire gold
body - Fly Rite Poly quill gordon/brown drake yellow
body hackle - grizzly/brown (undersize by 2)
wing - calftail yellow
collar/head - pronghorn dyed golden brown (2 Tsp Rit Golden Yellow, 1/4 Tsp Rit Camel/2 cups water)

Regards,
Scott

Years ago I picked up his vhs , life cycle of mayfly, ( bought my turkey and cdc supply’s from house of Harrop).
love those patterns. His transitional nymph pattern works very well

Thanks for sharing

Red Fox Squirrel Nymph (Fur collar variation)

Nice one, Jaydub.  The markings on the fox squirrel hairs are outstanding.

Haha! I still have his tying videos myself! Rene’s patterns are very well thought out in my opinion, and they are REALLY effective!
