A foam-bodied variation on the Norm Woods Special; here’s the link with a video, if you’re interested. Interesting pattern but with all that naked, unprotected hackle on a hook I don’t care for, I’ll stick with my Carnage salmonflies, thanks.

hook - Tiemco 200 #4
thread - UTC 140 fluoro orange
tag - tying thread/resin
body hackle - ginger (undersize by 2; trimmed flat on the bottom)
body - 1mm foam colored with black magic marker
wing - tan calftail dyed NWS (1/4 Tsp Rit Petal Pink, 1/8 Tsp Rit Tan, 1/8 Tsp Rit Tangerine/2 cups water)
hackle - brown

Regards,
Scott

Yeah, too much hackle for me.  If you trim the bottom of the hackle,  on a  Norm Woods Special and fish it half sunk, it's often more effective. If you want a high floating fly, there are better choices IMHO.

I don’t mind the amount of hackle but if I’m going to take the time to wind that much on, I’d add a rib for a little protection (I was tying this one true-to-pattern so omitted it here); otherwise the back end could come apart after a fish or two.  Give me a Carnage any day

Easier, quicker to tie, floats all day and no chickens are harmed in the process.

Scott

Comparadun with CDC legs

Thought the idea floating through this thread of adding legs to a Comparadun sounded interesting.  Here is my take on the idea. No doubt it will catch fish. I might like the CDC a bit shorter though...
