If you trim the bottom of the hackle, on a Norm Woods Special and fish it half sunk, it's often more effective. If you want a high floating fly, there are better choices IMHO. Body: 3 strands peacock herl (not twisted) Rib: Copper wire counter wrapped Hackle: Speckled hen dyed olive Thread: Light olive 2/3 of the body is wrapped in .015 lead wire. I don’t mind the amount of hackle but if I’m going to take the time to wind that much on, I’d add a rib for a little protection (I was tying this one true-to-pattern so omitted it here); otherwise the back end could come apart after a fish or two.
