I enjoy tying and fishing that pattern. Snowshoe hare is under-used. It floats high and required very little maintenance between catches, few things can beat it, certainly nothing natural. I was out a few weeks ago drifting nymphs with a little weight to get the flies down, and came to a stretch of flatter water with a few rises, so switched out the nymph for a # 14 or 16 tan Usual. I dress it with a little floatant. Cast it out a few times, I'm getting a good long drift, the Usual floating nice and high, looks like a perfect silhouette, to my eye anyway. But every time I try to skitter the fly, it breaks the surface and sinks. Somethings wrong, the Usual is a great pattern for skittering, maybe my tippet is wrapped around the bend of the hook or fouled on the wing or tail. I pull in the fly to see what the issue is: I failed to take the split shot off my leader when I tied on the Usual. It would float fine even with the shot on there, until I tugged it move it across the surface, then it would sink. Good stuff.
Baron 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2021 That is how I fish for gills and crappie with Royal Wulff and other wet flys. I just tug them under gently.

Yeah, I've noticed that with panfish, especially when fishing deer hair flies like a Madam X or a big EHC. They seem to fish better once they get water-logged and float just under the surface.
