@Sandan.  That second fly of yours looks like a Tups.  A fly which I don’t tie very well for some reason.

Thanks, but... It's PMD superfine dubbed thin on that hot orange thread.

Step-16.jpg

Haven't tied much lately, but I did sit down last week and tie up a batch of Fat Alberts last week.  It's a pattern I haven't really fished before, but decided it was time to try with Hopper season kicking into full gear down here.

Thread: 140 Denier (Hopper Yellow)

Body: 2-mm Craft Foam (Tan/Brown/Tan)

Legs: Centipede Legs (Orange Barred)

Wing/Hotspot: Z-lon (Orange or White)

Isonychia bicolor

This impressive mayfly is hatching on my home waters now.  They are such fun to imitate and to fish! They are big (Size 10-12), and you can prospect with them in the faster, skinnier water while you wait for the sulfurs to make an appearance or not! I find fishing them a lot like fishing terrestrials, no hatch is necessary to bring the fish up to them. Often some pretty nice fish come up to eat them too!

Thought I saw one or two of them up on the Swift this past Sunday, swung some soft hackles but no luck.  Nice fly.

Nice fly Toothy. Definitely looks edible to me if I were a trout.

Polka Dot Moth

IMG_20210629_051128_980.thumb.jpg.03ef99f931c525695862266cf6dc835d.jpg

I got the pattern from Helen Shaw's Flies for Fish and Fisherman. It is, apparently, based on the Polka Dot Wasp Moth or Oleander Moth. I could not find out any information about the fly. I would it originates in an area that has a lot of oleander bushes and Oleander Moths but that is just a guess.

Hook: Size Twelve Nymph

Thread: Orange

Tag: Florescent Fire Orange 70 denier Ultra Thread

Body: Doctor Blue Floss

Beard and Wings: Guinea

Thanks! These do seem to hatch like that, one here, one there but rarely a prolific hatch, at least on the Farmington. I tie a soft hackle emerger that I have had some good luck with, however, I like to fish BIG Isonychia dun patterns most.  I view them more as terrestrials than traditional mayflies, a good size Iso, will often be so tempting that a trout will break it's normal feeding to come up and grab one when it floats by.

Scraps from the tying table. Palmer chenille and high float fiber from the FTD.

Got some gills and small bass on this this am. Then something big hit the gill on the fly and went deep and wrapped around something.

Will have to tie a

few more.
