Crappie Jigs Anyone?

  • I'm thinking about a Crappie Jig Swap for jigs that are either 1/16th oz or 1/32 oz. I know that's off the beaten path for this forum, but I know there are at least a few jig tyers here. What I'm thinking about is that if we have 3 swappers to join, me & 2 others, we would each tie 3 jigs of 4 different patterns, (materials, colors, etc) for a total of 12 jigs. Each swapper would get back one jig of each of the 4 patterns that each tyer sends in for a total of 12 jigs back. If we have 4 swappers, we go to 4 jigs of 3 different patterns, and you get back 12 jigs. If we go to 5 swappers, we do 5 jigs of 2 patterns for a total of 10 jigs and each swapper gets back 10, and anything above 5 it will be 2 patterns for every how many swappers we have. We could leave sign ups open for a week, close the swap and determine how many jigs of how many patterns each swapper will tie.  I hope I've done the math correctly. It's easy for us old guys to get confused. Correct me if I'm wrong. So, is anyone interested in tying up some Crappie Jigs?

I'm game. Deleted your dupe posting by the way. I'll have to go out in the shed and see what I've still got left from my old days of jig pouring and fishing. We're not far away from the start of the crappie bite in the shallows here and even though you know I've plenty of jigs I can always keep some more on hand. 2# test line in the brush piles does make jig loss a regular thing.

Well, I joined your OTHER crappie jig swap, so I'll join this one too!

Kim

I MAY have to borrow someone else's feet to do this new math.

You joke about the "new math". I had algebra and trigonometry in secondary school and thought I could help on of the grandkids having trouble. She gives me page in some kind of foreign language I had no idea what it was doing to get to a simple number. A different grandkid brought over some very basic trig problems with triangles. When she showed me the way they were doing it I said, look, you have a right triangle, an angle, a side. Just go right to this formula and solve it in your head. She came back next day and said the teacher won't let them solve it that way but they have to go through a bunch of extra steps to get to the answer. I'm glad I learned the old math and we wonder why the cash registers today at fast food just have pictures of the food on the keys and change is made automatically. When one of my girls pulled out her phone to get the calculator to see how much a $20 dress cost at 40% off I knew we were in trouble. A store put some junk on a table with a sign 100% off all items on table. People were constantly bringing things to the counter to ask how much it would cost.

Oh yeah, this is about jig swaps. Sorry but being old enough to have had to calculate the points on a curve for road design and seeing that same thing now being just a snap on two differnet points on the screen and it's all done for you and then you just send the data to surveys who plugs it into their theadolite and it automatically calculates and sets all the points in the field. It's wonderful stuff but it's a good thing we still have a rare breed who wants to study advanced mathematics today.

I went through the McDonalds Drive Thru one day and the cost was $9.03. I gave the cashier a 10 bill and 3 cents because I wanted a dime back instead of a nickel and 3 pennies.

She looked confused and put $10 paid into the register and gave me the 7 cents and my 3 cents back to me. DUH!!!!

Another time at a store, the teenage clerk used a calculator to do subtraction that I would have done in my head as a 10 year old.

Remember slide rules. I showed my old K & E slide rule to my step son and he asked me what it was and he is pretty much a math genius.

Yes youngsters, we used do complex math and physics problem on these.

Well, I still got the math wrong because the Swapmeister isn’t counted so that the swappers don’t get back their own flies.

My computer kept on saying the post didn’t post for some reason and I kept trying. At least that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

I was lucky.  I was in HS math and started on the slide rule and in a couple years was working on a handheld calculator!  Luckily, my mom was a schoolteacher and I and my two brothers learned to do most math in our heads.  It still irks her to no end when she buys a $10 item that's 10% off and the cashier starts looking for their calculator!

Damn it,  BB, I can't resist.

I'd like to get in on this one, if you don't have too many swappers already.

I'm way behind on restocking my own fly boxes, so no worries if you cap the # of swappers without me.

Re: the new math.

Growing up my Grandparents owned one of those old mom-and-pop corner stores and sold everything from hard liquor, to fresh baked pies, to hand made grinders, to penny candy, all rung up on an old fashioned register. I would spend much of my summers out there helping them out, as the area was a bit of a summer tourist destination, so I learned to make change the old fashioned way - in my head. And he taught us to count the change back to the customer: '35 makes 2, 3 makes 5, and 5 makes 10'.  I sometimes get a kick nowadays watching the clerk's reaction when I give them $5.02 for a $3.27 charge.
