I'm originally from Methuen, we moved to the sunny south about 13 years ago, and I'll never go back.

You're probably up to your armpits in snow right now, only dreaming about fishing. Cheer up it'll get warm about June. Just kidding you.

We used to live on the banks of the Merrimac in Methuen. Did they ever get the salmon run going? About the time we moved they had just started to alow taking of salmon if I recall correctly. The shad run was alread going great. You should try for some of them on a fly rod.

Be sure to give Walden pond a try. It used to be very good.

If any is as frustrated by mailing the swaps and waiting what seems like forever for the package to get there you may want to try this.

I've started using "Priority Mail' for all my swaps going to the meister and also on my return envelope. The whole round trip only costs about $7 and the delivery time is usually about 2 or 3 days. Regular mail can be unpredictable and sometimes can take more than a week.

In addition for another 40 cents you can add tracking.

Not trying to start another vice war but be sure to look at Danvise. A really high quality rotary vise at a very low price. Most places sell them for about $79. I've had one for about 3 years now and I love it.

I got my flies today. They all look great, thanks to all who participated.

I'm tying a Bergman fly named the "Admiral". It's a red floss body with a gold rib red tail and red throat hackle and a white wing. Found it in a book called "Forgotten Flies" Full of flies you never heard of. Really heavy reading book weighs about 20 lbs I Think.

Are you going to post pictures of these beauties for the public??

I use plastic file boxes that are somewhat air tite. within these i file my feathers and fur in ziplocks and plastic envelopes that i put into file folders to keep things organized. MAKE SURE TO USE MOTH BALLS OR CRYSTALS IN A SMALL PERFORATED CONTAINER OR YOU'LL LOOSE ALL YOUR STUFF. This method has worked for me for several years, may not be the best but it aint the worst.

I'm sorry to have to do this but I'm going to drop out of this swap. As much as I love these things I have just a little too much on my plate right now.

I tend to let others judge my capability. I think it's more fun that way. After all don't we all try to impress our friends.

Mainly because I don't tend to use the same hooks all the time. It's primarily an issue of availability. I used to use Mustad almost exclusively but lately they seem harder for me to find so I buy Orvis, Tiemco, or whatever I can find to fit a requirement.

I try to buy good hooks well formed with sharp points that are well tempered steel. Those three brands seem to serve well for me.

The only things that I can add are

1. you can weave on the hook with the barb up or barb down. I depends on the material and that is by trial and error. Sometimes you get a better effect by turning the hook over.

2. This helps me when I weave. You are mainly tying a series of overhand knots. Just remember to put the bottom color in front of the top color and pass it through the loop you make. When you make your knot, then put the top color (dark) strand on the top of the hook. Think of the old line for making a square knot, "right over left and left over right" well it's almost the same thing here. Only difference is "bottom (light) in front of top (dark) (ALWAYS) Then put the dark strand over the hook and and the light strand under the hook and tighten the knot. Repeat the process always keeping the light strand in front.

I hope this helps. It's a little confusing study the photos they will help a lot. Pay particular attention to the sequence of a pair of knots the rest will all be the same.

By the way if you tie it upside reverse the color so the light strand is on the top (dark strand in front).

I hope this dosen't confuse you more. Search on the net there are many different explanations some are better than others. Good Luck.
