Starting to fish tailwaters more and want to tie some good comparaduns. I've read alot of advice that says get 'good' comparadun hair. I'm trying to find out what to look for in identifying good hair for comparaduns. What type of tips should it have? Fine diameter hair shafts? How much flare?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Jed

Bought some dyed goose biots to try making biot bodies for dry flies. Main question is do I use the long side biots or the shorter biots on the leading edge of the feather? Any help appreciated.
Thanks

After a recent trip fishing over selective fish, I'm thinking I need to start fishing more emergers. What are your favorite emerger patterns for either caddis or mayflies? Fish them in the film or just below surface? Recipes are great but with just a name I can look up how to tie it.
Thanks

One thing I do that helps is tie half the wing on then make a couple wraps, then tie on second half. Helps keep the wing from spinning and larger wings are possible without any fibers being loose in middle of clump.
Enjoyed this thread alot.

Bob,
That's a great tip! I will definitely give that a try as well. Seems I can only find the variegated chenille in medium which looks a bit large to me for smaller hooks.
Thanks

Kirk,
Thanks for the tip. Definitely worth a look.

I have been wanting to tie up some Pat's Rubber Legs nymphs also known as Girdle Bugs, The Pickle, or Jimmy Legs. These call for a variegated chenille. I have only been able to find the medium chenille in variegated and it looks too big on a #10 hook. Does anyone know if you can find the variegated in small or other options?
Thanks,

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to alternatives for Wapsi Thin Skin? I don't have any problems with its performance just paying $2.50 for a sheet barely bigger than a postcard is a bit tough. Mainly use it for stonefly backs and other trout nymph backs. Any input appreciated.

Runnarsson, thanks for the info on the Dyna Kimg. I thInk I'm leaning towards that vise for now. I was wondering how well it did with smaller hooks as my typical range is like #4 to #22.

I've been looking to upgrade vises and was looking for somethIng in the $200 range. I mainly tie trout flies in # 4 to # 24 range so I've been considering the Dyna King Junior Trekker and the Renzetti Traveler. I know that I will have to try them for myself ultimately but was looking for pro vs con for each vise.
Thanks,

I second Little River Outfitters. Nicest people of any fly shop I've seen and make sure you call for your order as they have WAY more stuff than what is listed on their online catalog. I needed some hooks yesterday and they only listed the model down to a 10 but when I called they had the 6's I wanted.

Just wondering if anyone knew where to buy spools of flat lead wire to weight nymphs, especially Czech nymphs? Any input appreciated.

Awesome looking fly. I'm trying to get better at soft hackles. What specific type of hen feather did you use and how did you wrap it (tie in at tip or butt)?
Thanks

Wow, thanks Al for the info. I didn't expect an answer from a fly-tying celebrity! Great to know some of the real gurus are on the board here!
Piker, I will definitely keep an eye out for summer skin.
