Playing around with a Deschutes pattern by John Hazel I saw on Speypages. A few materials substituted here (rib/body) but that's what happens when you tie at 5:00 AM and the shops don't open 'till 8. Head's a bit full on this one; may blade it off and try a sparser look.
    hook - Mustad 9671 #6
thread - UTC 140 burnt orange
    tail - moose body hair
    rib - mylar holo copper
    body - dubbing antique gold
    wing - grizzly hackle tips
collar/head - elk hair (in dubbing loop)

    AWESOME TIE

  2. Thanks Piker!

I think you might be right. I may not be taking the thread back over the same point.

I measure the wing. Pinch and make one loose wrap. I then let the weight of the bobbin press down on the wing where i want to tie it in. I then proceed with further wraps.

    Cheers

  3. Ok So here is the deal.....

I have been trying to post a new topic for 3 days now and for some reason I can. BUT I can reply to existing posts.... Very frustrating....

The topic of the new post was to ask why I have started crushing the outer down wing on my Muddlr Minnows? Tied 3 and had no issues. Started the fourth and whammo....crushed the outer wing. I am thinking it has to do with the direction of my first wrap?

    Any help?

    Cheers

  5. All materials appear typical except cant tell the abdomen material

    Tail - brown hackle fibers,

    Head - Gold bead

Wing case - possibly pheasant tail

Abdomen - olive biot or some other wrapping material? It's not dubbed (I don't think)

    Cheers

  6. Hi Everyone

I have the opportunity to visit family from Edmonton Alberta who just happen to also have vacation homes in Kelowna BC somewhere along Lake Okanagan. I reside in Melbourne, Australia and would love to take up the offer.

If I can manage to leave the office and dog, my wife and I are thinking of staying with them for two weeks in September in Lake Okanagan.

    My questions are

    1. Any fly guide recommendations?

    2. Is it just lake fishing (assuming from a boat) or is there also land based fly fishing available?

    3. Are there streams to fish as well?

    4. Is Sep a good time? (water temps etc)

    5. What flies would I be using (would like to tie a few myself)? Obviously a guide would have knowledge of flies

    6. Who are the best fly fishing outfitter stores in Edmonton or Kelowna?

I look forward to your feedback

    Cheers from OZ

  7. Wow. Fly typing symposiums!!!! Only in the USA!!

The equivalent in Australia consists of 5 grumpy blokes in a fishing shop who will give you heaps of feedback on a few flies you have just tied.

    "That's shitl

    "A beauty mate "

Oh and don't ask for pattern advice!!!!

Keep up the great work America and preserve the art!

    Hi vb1971,

They last for quite a while. The shot below is of some that's just about 100 years old now. They're from a collection that was back in the 1920's. I wrapped a herl around a hook that's on the right to show just how pliable they are still.

    Regards,

    Mark

  9. G'Day All

I have access to quite a few peacock feathers (>100 ) at a very good price (AUD 0.5 each). I have tied with one and was very happy with how well it wrapped and the iridescence. Each feather is on average 70 cm long (27.5")

    My question is

    1. How long will a peacock feather typically last for fly tying purposes and

    2. What is the best storage method to maximize longevity

P.S. 50 Plumes would last me 2-3 trout season based on my typical tying frequency (ie for my wife, nephew, the local cafe' owner ad myself).

I look forward to all your wisdom as usual (And jokes from Mike and Retro)

    Cheers
