Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

I aquired some peacock feathers today. I know I can use the herl, but are there any special uses for the eyes? They look so good, I don't want to waste them. Thanks.

You can use the full eyes as a wing on some flies. Take a look at Ron Lucus' flies in the database, I beleive he has one or two with whole eyes used.

When I user herl I dub it on thread or on wire to create

a chaneil (rope) so fish teeth won't distroy. When tyind

such as prince nymph on a size 18 hook (or smaller) I use

the long herls that are very slender that come out at the

very sides of the eyes. This makes a nice slender body

that is appropriate for the size of the fly.

Also in classic books I believe some of the Castskill dry

files? Strip the heral off the eye with an ereaser, lighten

up with mild bleech and use as quill body. I can't

remember the exact fly by name which used this

technique (sorry) you'll have to research this one.

There are a number Quill Gorden being the most know, Blue Quills and Ginder Quills also use the same body.
