Guest Report post Posted January 29, 2004 Thanks LB, I did well with the pattern last summer on my 3 wt. but I tied them all black. I thought the purple was a nice touch. We'll see. I want to scout out some seldom fished ponds for really big Gills this year. Gonna do a few chartruese and black ones too.

Guest Report post Posted January 30, 2004 I started to use hen hackle but figured that the soft hackle would be the first thing to fall apart making the fly less durable, and once it got wet and dried the soft hen barbules would just collapse against the chenille making it a "one trip to the water" fly. The rooster hackle can take more abuse and you won't have to pitch them in the "scrap hook" tray so soon. Everything else in the pattern are very durable materials and can last all day (if you don't put it in a tree )
