swiss straw vs. medalion sheeting?

Recommended Posts

Classics? Swiss straw.

Newer patterns? Medallion sheeting

I think the medallion sheeting is more durable.

Mostly just because the classics patterns call for swiss straw and it wouldn't be a classic without it. A lot just depends on the mood.

I use and like both. The difference is that medalion sheeting is flat and smooth and swiss straw has texture. Try not to get hung up on one material over another or one brand over another. Sometimes you will like one material for one fly and on the next the other material may just work better.

thank's Fred. I like swiss straw for that crinkly texture, I'm going to try the medalion on a couple of patterns & pit the two against eachother on the water

I use both as well. I like using both. I think they both have different characteristics and offer your flies different looks. Look up CarlP's BWO nymph using the Medallion sheeting as wing case.

Here are two flies I have been using one or the other.
