Classic Saltwater Fly #1- Cochroach

Recommended Posts

Guest

The first in this series is the Cochroach originated by lefty Kreh. It is tied with natural grizzly hackle, gold krystal flash, Brown squirel fox hair. Brown bucktail can be substituted. This is on a 3/0 Mustade saltwater hook

The "roach" is one of the go to flies here in FL for Tarpon. It works in Homosassa, Boca Grande and the Keys, the poons just can't get enough of them. But we tie them a little different here. Smaller than your rendition, with splayed hackles and more of a Stu Apte profile. Some guys leave the shank behind the eye bare so they can snell the fly to the leader.

The aim down here is to imitate a shrimp or crab, not a baitfish.

Thanks Trout... Keep in mind these flies I am posting are copies of the originals, so these are not the many variations...I will have a Stu Apte Fly and a Homer Roades Fly which will be very similar which you will see. In fact probably all these classic flies will have been tied with various alternatives... But they are the firsts... as far as reasonable research can determine.
