  1. Very neat. How did you make the head on the green one on the left. It looks like a real head. Also, how did you attach the hook to the shell?

    Thanks gpd4 .

Dave, The head was done the same on all of them. I use two pieces of 40lb mono for the neck and head . Then a piece of 17lb on each side of the face and head to give it width. The thread wraps make it cylinrical . The shells are tied in from the bottom thru slots cut into the sides in a figure "8"post-11886-0-58172400-1356991989_thumb.jpgpost-11886-0-44337100-1356992000_thumb.jpg

Wow , that shot from above is just killer. The head profile is dead on. Great job.

  3. Hi Joe , if this is a first attempt you look to have a great deal of fun ahead of you tying realistics. This is a great looking fly for a first effort. To make your legs look a little more appealing you should make your first bend up from the abdomen not straight out from the abdomen. This will help you give the fly a more natural posture. Keep up the great work.

  4. Thanks Kirk and Mike . Posting a sbs is on my list of things to do. Once you see how these are tied you can easily change the shape and size to match whatever beetle you like. But I must warn you ,once you get the hang of them it will be hard to stop.

  5. There is an option to remain on the old photobucket format but clicking on it does nothing.

i found that and it worked for me. all is good again!

The only option that will open on mine is the download Photobucket Desktop. I thought it was maybe a system wide glitch and it would be resolved in time . But it appears it may be more localized . Perhaps there is something I need to upgrade ?

  6. Photobucket wont let me upload a new photo unless I install their new software program on my computer . This may be a glitch . If it's not I will be moving from it shortly. There is an option to remain on the old photobucket format but clicking on it does nothing. I'll give them a couple of days to sort things out.

  7. I keep coming back just to look at the shrimp. Fred H you have some remarkable talent and an eye for detail, can you come to Canada for a demo? B) one day!

It's one of my dreams , that when I retire , to travel the world flyfishing and tying. However the way my wife spends money retirement keeps getting further and further away.Haha

Thanks for the kind words, Fred

  8. Wow! That should be on the "realistic" forum, Fred. I had to look hard to see which one was the fly. And yes, they look exactly like the ones we have here. I've fished with live ones I seined from the shoreline and you can't take your eyes off the bobber. Many times, the cork looks as though it didn't float, just hit the water and sank right in.

I am seriously going to try tying some that look as real as yours.

Mike , I'm holding a advanced tying clinic in Baton Rouge, La. Jan 12th . This will be one of the patterns taught. Once the class is completed I'll upload the steps here. Plenty of time befrore spring.

  9. Ginger and a dirty olive would match my local. Now can you provide a recipe or sbs. Is it UV resin or plastic wrapped round for the body?

Piker , this is tied on a size #18 hook . The thread used was 4M mono . I used 6lb mono for the body and a piece of ginger spanflex for a little color. I covered it with UV flex .
