  1. What do you guys think of this pattern? Would it ride hook down since the rabbit strip is over the cone?

    Weamer Streamer

to me the hook is out weight by the rabbit but just remember there is no telling till it hits the water and you strip . just like clousers minnows they put the dark color opposite side of the dumbell weight eyes. at lest i do if you took some small lead wire and wraped it around the bend 3-10 time depending on what it took and covered it with thread it will right it self in the water some time drag from the current will help your fly unright it's self the point is just play with it till you get it right

  2. I really do appreciate the support for Hatches(I need it) and believe me when I say that nobody works harder to put together the best magazine possible than I do.

For the exact reasons that everyone has mentioned I feel that Hatches may always be published once per year, twice at the most. I couldn't imagine trying to find enough good articles to fill 4 - 6 issues every year. It's hard enough to fill one.

now that the truth that why the others fill theirs with what fly the president united states is using and were and when he's using it. this is were i find mags like hatches and and a few other local one do way better. because it more pertains to what i am doing not them. if fly fish America was not free i would not read it.because they get to off the beaten path of were i fish. any ways good luck and tight lines and awesome job the site and the mag keep up the great work

here is one of those local mags well a link to it at least

  6. only problem i can see is eye sight and being able to tie small knots when needed

here is a standard proportion chart for a steel head fly pic below

    IPB Image

as for materials to many to list you can use floss yarn silli floss etc.. for the body wing goose shoulder or dyed calf tail squirrel tail dyed and non dyed silver squirrel and red pine squirrel married wing flies with goose shoulder etc...

start at tail work way forward get in good habit's like up and over tying using half hitches and whip finishers

along with how to strip back chenille to tie in, how to lay down a even floss body with tags and every thing else so not to gain bulk, proper techniques for tying in hackle, use of proper proportions , how to use two sided mylar tinsel.how to make perfect heads, use of nail polish to make a gloss head take me about 6 coats etc...

any ways just eye balling the correct size is all that is needed for proportions

any ways hop this stuff help get you started good luck and tight lines rhino................

  8. thanks for the comments all around....yeah I'm a sucker for soft hackle style....plus the guinea fowl hackles I have are mostly on the long side....greatly appreciated

    one those are awesome

two have you ever tried pheasant rump feathers from a ring neck pheasant and used it as hackle like soft hackle or guinea fowl. gives that natural brownish look i love with a little shimmer from the feathers natural iridescent huge. any ways thought i would see if other use this feather any ways good luck and awesome flies.........

  9. Looks to me like it may be two feathers...even different colors? mor of a brown olive palmered over the back and a true olive in the chennille? If not different collors than I can not think of a reason to utilize two feathers unless you do not have one long enough to wrap all the way as needed :dunno:

btw color change over different materials

i have done the same thing on hexes and drys wrap fwd with hackle and tie in crystal chenille make one turn with the chenille over the hackle to jump the hackle and flip the hackle back. then wrap the rest of the chenille fwd and then wrap the hackle and tie it off any ways hope that helps good luck and tight lines rhino............

  10. try sally Hansen's hard as nails nail polish in clear it what they use for waspi etc... head cement.if you do not thin, it will cover and gloss in 3-6 coats but has to dry in between coats. and yes it come in it own little bottle it what i have use on my glossiest head flies i like it best over black thread it what i use on my salmon flies.

  11. you can change colors up like your thinking. here is a few samples of of flies i tied for caddis one the elk hair in tan which we all know what it is and how it tied because it's the grannom med brown sage.

all i do is change all the material colors to dun gray like dun gray hackle adams dubbing and and use a wing of natural dun colored cdc. to imitate chimarra aterrima and chimarra agustiapennis. a.k.a. the little black caddis

one problem with bwo nymphs were i live and fish they are to small to see in the roaring water so size 16 and 18 are better top fish then say a 20 or 22 bwo

but yes the pt nymph is better to fish the the fat nymph of the hares ear nymph

any ways hope this helps good luck and tight lines rhino.................
