  1. any one ever here of tied true catskill style dries i was at a show one year and figured out how to do it. when we read a hackle gage like a griffin hackle gage those are set a little big when you read the gage and the hackle cross the line it already 1-1/2 or even 2 times the gape so in other words a size 14 hackle on a 14 dry is wrong if you do it the tied true way you put a 16 hackle on the dry because of build up etc... of thread and wing material so using a size 16 on a size 14 yields a size 14 dry with 1-1/2 to 2 times the gape of the hook. if you use that 14 hackle on a 14 hook it almost always yields a 12 size dry. any ways try it and all you have to do to tell the difference between the two is drop them several time on a desk surface. the tied true fly will sit up almost every time and like it will in the water righting it self unlike the reg tied fly. any ways good luck and tight lines rhino....................

btw if you use loner shank hook use a reg sized hackle etc etc... just to proportion the body

  6. what day 5 said and i will add wigglers tied on either a 37160 or a 3x size10 streamer hook you know all those colors of chenilles you got like hot pink, blue, red , olive,etc... tie them on as a clark lyn nymph on the streamer hook or the 37160 tail of ring neck pheasant tail then tie in hackle then wrap the chenille then make a shell back with the tag end of the pheasant ribbed down buy the hackle favorite color of hackles are brown i use cheap china necks for tying these flies also some streamer in sizes 2 and 4 and stone flies in size 6-8and 10 on streamer hooks . any ways good luck and tight lines rhino................

  7. quick question what size caddis are you tyeing . have you thought of dry fly quality capes my suggest is figure out 2 thing are you going to be tying a ton of dries with the brown would a whitting roster saddle work better they tie down to size 20's and go up to i thing 12's depending on the grade and you will get 3-5 flies out of each hackle feather me i prefer silver grade it has size 18 and 16 and a and a few 14's the reason i like it is i tie my 14 dries with a size 16 hackle and 16 's with a size 18 hackle those are the best deal for you money for dries also if looking at hackle bring a hackle gage and gage what size feather are on the cape wit it take measure meant from a couple area on the cape and do not pull out feathers they will fall out very easily and whiting hackle in the bronze roster cape are great for the beginner fly tier the sizes are a broader range in the capes. any wys good luck and tight lines rhino..................

  8. it depends on the fly and the hook like a dry 2/3rd body and 1/3 wing / hackle and i try to stay back on big streamer about 1/8 of a inch all the way down to dries being 1/32 of a inch back from the eye you will get it sooner or later plus like i said it depends on the hook like 2x verses 4 x for nymph hook etc.... also count wraps you should not do more then 3-4 warps to tie some thing down like not to build it up to much then when you get to the head you can use the thread also i like clear nail polish over black thread it thicker then head cement and takes about 6 good coats to build up

  9. sorry i don't live around you so i say dry fly dun , a nymph like the hare ear and the pheasant tail ,a streamer like a mickey fin or black nose dace, or shiner etc...and a caddis like the elk hair, those would be all pattern that you could have as go to flies and just change the color to them to imitate what your after. any ways good luck and tight lines rhino........ the reason i say those patterns they are the basics of all flies out there with some variations you could tie any thing like a loop wing dry once you learn how to splay tails and dub the body every thing else is simple then all you got is the loop for a wing

  10. I know whiting offerns the rooster neck and saddle and also the hen neck and saddle, and even more the bird fur. They are all listed as being a spey feather. Which one would be the best for a traditional spey like feather?

They are all all very close to the same. Their sizes and size ranges are the differeance between rooster and hen and cape and saddle.

 very true i would chose depending on size of hook i say the roster neck because i tie bigger flies that and ring neck rump feather will cover those big hooks that why i stated "me i like" any ways good luck and tight lines rhino.........
