  1. Like almost all fly patterns, it has been done before. I hate it when that happens. :wallbash: Say WHAT??? i think i some how stroke this kitten the wrong way.... :scared: Sorry for bringing You to a boiling point :jumpy: But im more sorry to SteveGibson for letting this pollute a realy nice tropic/pattern  . Claudia :nono: Thanks for the support, Claudia. But don't feel sorry for me. I did nothing wrong. I'd never ever seen a fly like the Skitterbug. If it has been done before, then I apologize. Lefty Kreh told me one time when we were fishing that every fly is nothing more than a variation on the same theme. I'm not sure what the purpose is of fishingbub's post? He could show us the "original" in a pic!
  2. The fly fishes very nicely. And most importantly, the fish seem to like it!

  5. Thanks. The fish seem to love it, so I guess that's good!
  6. I do "fairly" well on tilapia and catch most of them on fly rod. I don't target them, per se, but catch them while blind-casting. They are in most every freshwater lake, pond, river, canal and creek in the state. Most people see them on their beds and try to fish for them. But they're usually very nervous and will spook. I've heard people say that they'll cast a bait, lure or fly on the nest and wait for the spooked tilapia to return and pick up the object to move it off the nest. I've found that in waters where they're plentiful that I'll catch them on a variety of flies: popping bugs, my Myakka Minnow and nymphs. True story: One day John Roche, who is the park manager of Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey, Fla., and I were fishing Gilley Creek off Lake Manatee. We were casting No. 7 Rapalas on spinning tackle. We could see fish swimming 10 out of the shoreline grass to take out lures. Turned out they were large tilapia. John called a state fisheries biologist, who promptly told us we weren't catching tilapia because they're vegetarians and don't eat minnows. John assured him that we were catching tilapia. He said, "Well, they must have been defending their nests." The next were 15 feet away. I used to catch a lot of them on the Myakka River, but there was a fish kill out there two years ago that hurt the population. Also, we target tilapia at the Jackson Road Recycling Facility in Venice. Additionally, I've caught spotted tilapia and blue tilapia on flies from canals in the Everglades. 11. Headed out to Lake Manatee this morning. Caught quite a few quality fish. Got some nice bluegill, speckled perch and tilapia. Caught some bass, but they were all small. Top fly was my No. 8 Nymph FLY (Fuzzy Leach Yarn) that I just tied on Thursday. It did really well. Specks are in the shallows and average about 1 1/2 pounds. I fished east of the S.R. 64 bridge along the north side of the lake. Bite was semi-slow, but consistent. You just had to keep your fly in the water. Got quite a few fish in the afternoon on the Myakka Minnow. First speck: Tilapia (great fight): Bluegill: Golden shiner:

  16. LOL, no, I don't wade. I fish out of my Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5. It's a great boat for our rivers and lakes.
  17. The Myakka River always has been one of my favorite places to fish. However, fishing has really been bad for the last two years. In fact, I haven't fished it in quite a while. I decided to try it again. I was surprised. I had to work hard for every fish, but I ended up with 25 bluegill, shellcracker and stumpknocker. Almost all were quality fish. Had one hit (a miss) on a popping bug. Things heated up when I changed to a No. 10 nymph. Got all my fish on it. The river is beautiful and a true reflection of Old Florida. It's only 10 miles from the house, so I plan to hit the river more often. Myakka River: Bluegill: Shellcracker: This gator made me pick another route:

  19. Good looking fly! But 49 tying steps is a bit much for me.
  20. A few years ago, I started putting flies that caught a memorable fish in a Zip-loc bag with information (time, date, water, etc) on an index card. I've accumlated quite a few over the years and it's fun every once in a while to pull them out and walk down memory lane. As far as other used flies, I'll throw them away when they get torn up!
  21. That is a great looking fly. I've used those tails for some surf snook flies and they work pretty darn good.
  22. Thanks, all. The fly is a killer for sight-fishing snook in the surf: I've have also taken redfish, spotted seatrout, ladyfish, jack crevalle, Spanish mackerel, little tunny, dolphin, bass and barramundi on it!
