welcome to the tiny fly club. Like lanvaettir said it's a slippery slope and the next thing you know you're trying to tie a size 28 adamsuser posted image

and dreaming of getting your hands on some size 32 hooks.

Um... is it just me, or are your fingers purple??? huh.gif unsure.gif

  2. Did anybody go to this besides me? I thought it was really cool. I even saw of the masters himself - Blane Chocklett! I never thought i'd meet him in real life, and when i talked to him, i kind of had trouble getting the words out biggrin.gif. It was fun seeing him there, and some of the flies he had tied with Sili Skin were amazing. He was one of the youngest guys there, but his flies were amongst the best. I also saw someone name Hopper (first name i forgot, if you're reading this, i apologize, but i only got a glimpse of your area) and a pair of two people, a man and a woman known as the "Wulffs".

The expo was yesterday, March 5th. I know this was a little late, but i just had to see if anyone else was there. I should go to the next one too.

Also, i asked Blane about this (but since he doesn't live here, he wasn't too sure); does anybody know a place in the Bergen County area of New Jersey where LocoFoam/LocoSkin is sold? The Ramsey Outdoors had Sili Skin, so i know where to get that.

    Thanks! Tight Lines!

  3. Sorry about the quality of the picture, I had just finished a Coca-Cola, so i was pretty jumpy. The fact that I couldn't get the lighting right kind of messed up the picture, but i hope you can still salvage a viable image.

I got the idea of using synthetics from Pujic's Clouser Minnow... I can't even come close!

This is one of my first flies (maybe number 50), so I'm still getting used to things. Criticism is welcome.

  4. I remember when I was bait fishing (bait, ugly word, eh? JKJK) and we (my father and I) used hellgramites on the Delaware. Those suckers had large jaws, so i made my dad hook them biggrin.gif . He was almost as scared as i was! However, the hellgramites proved to be very productive. I always carry some hellgramite patterns with me where ever i go.

  5. This may seem like a broad question, but i looked around on the net and came up with very little. I've read Harrison Steeves' new book Tying Flies with Foam, Fur and Feathers and i got a few patterns (such as the LA Ant , UFO and the Firefly) but I'm still looking for other patterns I can use for Panfish. I also tied up some of these Fishy's Hoppers, but my fly box still seems like it's missing something. Because the nearest flyshop is about 30 minutes from me, my supplies are limited. mad.gif sad.gif . Does anybody care to share some panfish flies? I would appreciate any patterns which contain foam, because that is one thing i have an abundance of, but any pattern using marabou or chenille is fine.

    Thanks! Tight Lines! TRBD

  6. I was walking through my local craft store about a week ago, looking for sheets of foam to use for beetle, ant and hopper patterns. I was happy to find 2mm foam in the form of doorhandle signs, which is the size needed to tie Fishy's Hopper. I also found a foam which was covered in fuzz. It had a almost velvety texture, and came in a variety of colors. Immediately, Pujic's M.P. Dragon sprang into mind. Unfortunately, i only brought 5 dollars with me (to limit the amount of money I spend), so i decided to leave this foam for another day.

My question is this... Would the foam I described work as a substitute for furry foam? Is it the same thing as Furry Foam? Thanks.

  7. "Off the Wall" is kind of a vague description, but here are some things you could add to make it more "appealing" to fish (or to the tier).

    1)Add a bead head

2)Add crystal flash (or any shiny material) to the marabou tail

3)Use color patterns which contrast each other (or ones which are alike)

4)Tie patterns with and without lead weight so you can have flies for different occasions.

5)For ants, look in "Tying Flies With Foam, Fur, and Feathers" by Harrison Steeves. He has some really nice patterns. Tie up some sinking patterns (Transpar-ant and Attract-ant), you can google them, or find them in Harry's book.

    Good Luck

You will fine the grizzly tips are a bit flimsy but if you have a cape use the pin feathers at the base of the cape the quill is sturdier

I missed this post the first time around, but i just tried it out, and it makes tying wings so much easier. I'm even able to tie them on the really small sizes. Thanks!

EDIT: But back on topic, i would think a lack of wings would seem more appealing to trout (or any fish) because it makes the fly more vulnerable to prey. I heard (in a book) that fish are more likely to take the flies that are stuck in the water film because they are easier to eat, so this might work in the case of wings.

  9. I've been tying up some Adams recently and tying in the wings is getting annoying. The hackle constantly pushes them down, and it often gets in the way, leading to a crowded head. I started leaving out the wings on patterns which use hackle tips. My question is this : will the absence of wings turn off fish? Would it be better to leave in the wings? Thanks in advance!
