  1.

A cheap solution may be to use an old TV cabinet. People are throwing these out or selling them cheap as everyone has flat panels now. I made this one for under $100 - just added a better slider to get the bench out more, a few shelves, some wood, and a light. Most even come with power outlets hidden in the back.

Best part of it is that you shut the door and its all hidden away.

  2. I try and try but just keep buying and packing more and more stuff....so the Fishpond Coyote was the bag for me. Plenty of room and as durable as it gets. The amount of stuff you can put in there is amazing.

I travel for a living and it takes a fair beating, so it was worth every penny....otherwise a large tackle box etc may fit the bill for most light travel use.

  3. I have a pair of the Cabela's breathable waders, and they are great. They cost about $130, as I recall, but were well worth it. Easily the most comfortable waders I have ever owned.

I second the cabelas breathable waders - for the price these things are rock solid. Eventually I lost a plastic snap on one of the shoulders but just knotted it together and its still fine. Im pretty hard on waders and these have done 3-4 seasons without a leak or tear. They are lightweight, basic, and affordable.

  4. having closely compared the Peak and the Renzetti....I would certainly say the Peak is a better made vise.

While its a personal choice and both will suit most people fine...look and play with both and decide!

To me the Renzetti seemed cheaper - plastic, aluminum, and rubber (like the previous poster said)

The Renzetti may take center stage at cabelas, but that does not make it the best thing out there!

  5. Thanks, guys. I just need to be patient... I just really want to get these materials so I can get to tying!!

    :headbang:

It would probably be a good idea for me to order them earlier in the week though. Thanks for the info though, fellas.

    Tight threads

    -CF

Im in CT also and JStockard usually takes 3 business days, either USPS or UPS.

Great bunch of people and a pain free website.

Refreshing to get fair prices, great customer service, and not get screwed on shipping.

  6. I thought a vise just held a hook tight and let you tie some flies to catch fish?

If that vise makes you feel spoiled, well researched, has helped you in grieving your father, and has brought you back to tying as a great pleasure - wonderful.

Just leave it at that and everyone would be happy for you.

At the end of the day, to 99.00% of us, its just a tool holding a hook to tie a fly.

  7. I think a kit is a great idea....its a good way to try out the hobby at a disposable price.

You may decide its not for you....not out much.

I bought a kit and loved it, shortly after bought some good tools etc. I did, however, wind up using a good portion of the kit anyhow.

Yes, you could run to 5 different craft stores and find better quality stuff online cheaper but the point is a quick simple trial of fly tying.

IMO - Its a good way to try some flies without a large investment.

  8. I have the Peak Rotary, its a great vise. I personally thought it was better built than the Renzetti.

J Stockard often has deals on it, and seem to be running Xmas specials now. Their customer service and shipping times/prices cant be beat.

Peak Vise and Slick tool kit is a real solid start IMHO.

  9. Personly i think many people but a very expensive gun, rod, vise, reel etc in an attempt to buy skils. Its like the guy who spent 1500.00 on a fly rod on Ebay. i wonder if he is as good as the rod is. I wonder if he is as good as a 250.00 rod. When i was in Alaska fishing on the rivers i fished with Ugly stick fly rod. I caught just as many if not more fish than the guys using the sage and what not. Also i saw several guys break thier expensive rods and almost cry. Its the indian not the arrow in most cases.

and some people simply have the means to buy nice stuff and dont really care if it makes them better or not, they just like nice stuff.....who cares?

  10. Well, I sent my Regal by priority to Orange, Mass. with a note with my name, address,

e-mail, phone number. After 2 weeks with no word, I contacted them and

ask if my busted vise had arrived and the lady told me that it had and that

"It is repaired and ready to shipped back to you as soon as we receive payment."

The reconditioning fee is $40. Although I now have

a nice new HMH (with an "unconditional" lifetime warranty), which I

absolutely love, I want my Regal back as well to use as a second vise, so

I'm sending them the $40. Not happy with the situation, but what are you

    gonna' do?

    Mike

    now THATS poor customer service....

  11. Thanks for the input.....the video did it in a less complicated way than the step by step I was using.

Hope it works well, these have been great on the Housy and Farm for me!

If nothing seems to be working these do save the day.

  12. OK I went with the Peak - was on sale for $143 + $5 shipping,

With purchase they were running a special - pick out $25 in tying supplies..so with the $40 credit I had, I checked out for about $100 for the Peak Rotary and 10 new spools of thread I needed.

    Im so cheap...lol.

  13. Can't go wrong with the peak, but it is not a tiny little travel vise. In reality, any fly vise is a fairly portable tool except a few out there. If you want a small vise, consider an HMH Spartan, about the same $$ as a peak if you shop around. I have both, and much prefer the Peak, but vises are like Motorcycle Oil or Women. One person's idea of perfection is another person's idea of wreckage--- and neither person can prove anything!

    Thanks

I dont mind a little extra weight, I travel heavy anyhow..and I have read that the Travellers downfalls are too light of a base and the O-rings.

Im hoping to get hands on with all of them first but that might not be possible.

    appreciate everyones feedback.

  14. I have narrowed my selection down to a few - any advice?

    Renzetti Traveler ($175)

    Peak Rotary ($150)

    Griffin Mongoose ($175)

Will use it a little for travel as well as home.

Any experience with above I'd welcome the thoughts!

    Thanks
