Well I fish small rivers and creeks. 4 feet deep is the deepest holes. I tend to switch from crawdad flies to streamer patterns. Action is starting to heat up here in central Illinois. I'm gonna throw some Barto minnows, bigger Clousers and the SBS fly.

What's everybody throw for fall Smallies when the water starts to cool down? Right now I'd say my waters are 55-62 degrees.

I just use Clouser minnow patterns tied with lighter bead chain eyes. The drop rate is real slow and it keeps the fly up in the fishes view longer. Works great!

Loons Hard Head or Hard as Nails works great.

I live in Vermilion county Illinois. How close is the Sugar creek from me? I would use Clousers and topwater if they are working surface. Good luck!

I very rarely keep fish also, but pan fishing with my 2 wt might change that. Man the gills were delicious. And a buddy told me even if u only catch a few, keep them and fillet them out and every time out just add a few fillets to the bag. Before u know it u got enough for a fish fry.

Tied these up recently and they paid off. Me and a buddy hit em hard with our 2 and 5wts. 48 Gills\Redears and 1 Crappie.
