  1. Good Grief! Ants! Ants EVERYWHRE! Quick, somebody get the bug spray. Big ole black ants!

Midnightmoonlight's ants arrived today, and they are SO NICE! I can't wait to dangle this pattern in front of some 'gills.

Midnight, a couple of questions. What size and style hook did you use? And what is the body material. Not the foam, the chenille-like stuff that you used to form the body?

I REALLY like this pattern and I'm going to have to tie some up.

    Take care

    Thanks.

The hooks I used came in a big lot of fly tying stuff I bought. They are size 8. Thats all I know for sure but I think its a mustad dry fly hook dont know the numbers. The body is Medium cactus chinelle (That I dont like because alot of it falls apart while tying but it is a nice effect)

Sorry for the lack of info

  2. Runarsson I saw a nice tie like yours using v-rib black on the top and clear on the bottom then a colored floss under the clear v-rib. It was the polish weave and it looks great but takes some time even when you can tie them fast. You have to be careful with the v-rib because it breaks easily.

The one I tried came out okay

  3. I dont care how people fish....to each there own.... just upset that Field and Stream made no mention of its legality in some places especially with new regs just coming out.

riffleriversteelheadslayer isn't there a big difference between a weighted fly and this system? With the article system the weight hits the bottom fast and stays there the flies drift down and then swing which from what I understand this has a high chance of snagging fish? Also there are weight limits for weighted flies so this seems like away around an over weighted fly to get the fly down

  4. Ive only fly fished 2 seasons now. This happened to me. I got my line stuck in a branch low enough to wade to and reach. When I reached for my fly there was 2 flies on a small piece of leader. I tied the leader onto mine and caught my first nice size rainbow in this river.

Someone was telling me to shake limbs of trees to see what kind of bugs are around now I also look for other peoples flies to see if I can match the snag ;)

  5. Thanks so much everyone for the info. The places I fish not many people fish so its hard getting good local info. Plus I dont want to give up some of the streams I fish to a fly shop. Most of the places I go only have small numbers of native fish. Last thing I want is a fly shop spreading the word about some of the good fish Ive been finding. Although I do talk to the 2 fly shops about there experience in my area on the more fished streams to get some ideas.

I was very happy to catch a 14" brook trout on a brown wooly worm with orange that I tied. The brook is small too 10' at its widest. It has a good range of brookies 2"-14". I caught alot of little ones one windy day with red adams size 12

Im trying to get my general flies together that will work all over then work on specific variations for the streams I fish.

Im moving to Oswego NY next year so Im only going to be here for a short amount of time.

Once I get my general small stream flies and bass flies together Ill be working on Salmon river, and Oswego river flies. A drift boat is in my future very near future next winter actually. I just hope I can score a job like I have now where Im able to fish whenever I want :)

    Thanks Again

  6. Great info thanks. Keep them coming. Im very new to fly fishing and "prospecting flies" are what Im looking for.

I wont shad fish much. Im mostly fishing for Native and stocked Brook trout in small local streams I can get to regularly. Then of course some nice hidden bass hot spots.

I have alot of dry and wet flies in my boxes I will be replacing with my own. The reason Ive been tiing what I have been is I dont have them already. I bought a few fly fishing lots and they came with lots of flies.

My big problem is showing up at a stream with no hatch and only a few hours to fish. I can only tie on so many flies in an hour or two to prospect. I have to limit the amount of flies I try so I can concentrate on fishing.

This year Im going to bring all my flies but pick out my prospectors before I go and concentrate on those until there is a hatch if any.

It seems like once I get my fly boxes organized I decide to change my filing system. Im going to organize some by stream and by prospecting.
