  1. Question: Are the pheasant tail and thread tubes the same diameter?
  2. Check these out. They are whiting musky packs. They would be used the same way as flatwing hackle, based on my limited understanding of flat wing flies. David http://www.caddisflyshop.com/whiting-musky-packs.html
  3. It's not that your teachers are too poor, it's that they don't fly fish, therefore they really have no need to buy flies. I am sure that if you have a future teacher that fly fishes, he or she will buy flies from you.
  4. In my opinion, it all depends on the situation. I usually use non uv and uv. I think uv is just an added tool in the anglers' arsenal and should not be the only type of material used. Using only uv or non uv just because you think one always works better than the other is like using only one color or one size of a fly instead of different colors or different sizes, but hey, if that's how you want to fish, that's your prerogative, and I have no right to tell you how to fish. Also keep in mind that uv products were almost unheard of a year or so ago, but I was still catching fish like crazy a year or so ago.
  5. I use three or four strands of Krystal Flash doubled on itself, so I actually have six to eight strands. I find that the Krystal Flash reflects more light helping me find the fly on the water.
  6. I would have a set of two books. The first book would only focus on the basic techniques like whip finishing, laying down a base layer of thread, and so on. A section of the first book will also be focuses only on proportions of all types of flies. The second book would teach the tier patterns. The patterns would start out easy and then get more difficult as well as build upon previous learned knowledge like a technique or skill used in the previous flies. Also, the books would include a DVD showing the various techniques and flies.
  7. I agree with everything that has been said about the thread base, thread tension, and pinch loops. I would like to add that you can, once you've secured the elk hair, pull the waste end back and wrap two or three wraps in front of the hair. This ties together the elk hair to the hook shank. David.
  8. Hi, it is great to join this forum. I am 23 years old and have been tying flies for 13 years. I first started tying flies when I saw my grandfather doing it so he would not have to buy flies. He has not bought or tied a fly since I started. I am getting reading to graduate from college with a degree in elementary education. David
