Hi Old Hat
There are a number of configurations for Tenkara. I'm talking about a combination of a level line and leader or a braided line and leader . Some people incorporate Czech nymph leader formulas making sighter leaders for nymphing . If you'll sign up I can point you to some links and resources.
-
Hey Dave
So glad this was new to you. Usually when I give someone more than they asked for, an apology soon follows, lol. Hope it helps you with your nymphing too .
-
Hi David
Have you seen George Daniels leader formulas? Also the Czech nymphing leaders are good also.

Great! I've done a bit of tenkara line/ leader fabrication research and experimentation, but I'd like to see your links. Hopefully you've turned up something I haven't. I am always looking to learn something new.

Hi Bob
It's a really fun way to fish. So simple and more focused and for me, meditative. If you're looking for good rods, TFO's soft hackle series is super. Enjoy!

I'm going to Hartford the third week of october and want to flyfish local waters. Where do you suggest?
-
Thanks: I'll check them out!
troutnaboutYou can buy Rhode Island Red capes from Dette Trout Flies. The feathers are easily stripped with a bleach solution.
-
I'll tie #12 red quill since quill gordon is already taken. Where can I get Rhode Island Red quills?

A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by Jaydub:
Masterfully tied Jaydub. Impressive!

Your grandfathers fly rod is priceless when kept in the family I'd re-wrap put on some fresh cork it and keep passing it down. You got that right. I'm never gonna sell it. just didn't want to do anything to de value it. I can't wait to land my first fish on it. Unless my daughter has a son,it will go to my nephew who is my fishin buddy

This is my first time hosting a swap, and I tried to come up with something different and fun. Now you could say there's no such thing as a new, orignal pattern, but if you're like me, you just haven't seen every pattern ever tied!. And you saw something, got a fly in a swap, thought of what you believe would catch fish, or got some new material and it sparked an idea for a fly that, as far as you were concerned, was "orginal." And that's good enough for me!So it's any inovation you've made in a pattern, something you came up with yourself, or anything else that makes it something beyond copying a pattern from somewhere. We're not being picky purists here... it's all in fun! Any species. I also think it would be interesting if folks posted how/why they came up with the fly.
Swap is open to 15 tiers, deadline is May 15th. All other swap rules apply.

Steve call me for lunch this week. I have worked on some rods, you can do most repairs unless it is de-laminating.great. pm me your number.
-
If the splits in the grip you mentioned are those four grooves most visible in the right image, they are probably original to the rod. I have an SB which have more grooves than yours.Wow, thats interesting, it's just part of the original manufacturing? That's even better cause I like the comfort grip design on the handle. looks like it will only need some ferrule replacement and some re-wrapping on thread.

It depends a lot of the condition. There's still a good number of old South Bend rods circa 40's-50's out there but they were pretty good cane rods so they still have some decent value. If it's in really good shape then it would be worth around $150 or right in that range. If it's needing some work (re-wrapped/grip worn and or small chunks out of the cork) or anything like that then most those that need some work will sell for anywhere between $60-$80. If you can take a pic of it I could tell you better.Steve
Steeldrifter
sounds like it's the $60- $80 range. Needs some re-wrapping and guide replacement. also, comfortgrip handle is dried out and has split rings showing. Thinking about having it restored so I can use it. I'll post a pic later today. Thanks for the info

Classic rod is good site. I have two old Orvis and was told to email Orvis. In a day I got an email about who made them and when. Kind of cool to know. Thanks troutguy. That's a great idea !

I have a copy of Michael Sinclair's Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook. It may not contain information about everyBamboo rod South Bend ever made. But the book doesn't contain any information about a 341. It does contain
information about a 346. Is it possible what you believed is a "1" was originally a "6" ?
Yes it is a 346 I read it wrong

Hi old hat
Hope you will reconsider. I am going to move the due date to October 30th. You can do a very easy leader by using tippet ring for each step down in your tapered sections. Just use an improved cinch knot to attach the tippet to the ring. Easy peasy
