Washing and dyeing mallard flank

Recommended Posts

Hey guys wondering if anybody had anymore input on washing, drying, and dyeing mallard feathers? Ive read to was them with dawn dish soap and warm water or they won't take dye well. I was wondering what's the best way to dry and "fluff" them. And dose dyeing with kool-aid work well?

In my experience mallard feathers dye very well and quickly. (I use a hot solution of Veniards or Rit dye.) If the feathers are dirty or oily a brief wash with dish detergent (I use Sunlight) will ensure there is nothing to impede the penetration of dye. (Usually the wash is unnecessary.) After a thorough rinse I blot the feathers between paper towels and then air dry. If you are dying massive lots of feathers, a hairdryer (not too hot) will help get them dry.

I dye mallard with onion skins all the time to make a "wood duck" substitute.

add a little vinegar to your dye. it will help set the color.

I dry my feathers 1st in paper towel squeezing the water from them.

then I put them in an old pillow case tie a knot in the top throw it in the drier.
