  1. Ok this is my first attempt to tie. Its a crude Wooly Booger. I just cant get the spinning of the hackle . Let me know what you think. Anyone seen a good video on how to spin the hackle are ever you call it

Great thing about the bugger is it catches fish...no matter what it looks like. Keep practicing. Way better than my first fly :) Cut yourself some slack.

  2. Nice tie. The first thing I thought was RS2 just because of the body to tail proportion although this is definitely a fly unto itself. What color variations do you find works best? I'll have to tie a few up and give them a shot this winter.

Thank you, Blake. Yeah, I'm a fan of the RS-2 style tail. I use it on a few other flies now and then. Gray, black and brown are my most successful. Gray being the best for the Roaring Fork (where I primarily fish). But I always use a white foam wing case covered with the mirage flashabou.

Give it a drift, I think you'll like it.

  3. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by flydoc:

Great pattern. The CDC is a nice touch. Are the European BWO's are a little bigger than what we have in the western US? I'd be hard-pressed to find anything larger than an 18 hook around here - Usually a 20 or 22 especially the fall hatch.

Nice variation of a proven pattern. Thanks for sharing. I like your choice of materials.

Thank you Ray. Its very durable too. The natural PT and herl tend to break after a few hookups especially if you've obtained sub standard materials (like I do on occasion).

I twist the herl and phesant around the thread, stays happy through many fish. Not sayin your bug is not great, just adding.

    Cheers, Futzer.

Never thought of that! Gonna try that, thanks.

  5. Thanks Old Hat and INS. If you were wondering as well...I got a question as to why the tails are long since mayfly nymph tails tend to be shorter. Well, short answer is this; I tried to match the RS-2 style fibbet tails tied by Rim Chung. Seems to be a real good trigger, even though they are not proportionate to the naturals. Who knows, fish eat some funky lookin flies :) They like this one, for sure.

  6. Like the flies, but one ???. Why the long tails on a nymph, they always have short tails. The duns have a long tail, and the spinner longer yet..I have found short tails on my nymphs work better..

Hey sandflyx, thanks for the compliment. Ya know, for some reason, the fish really like those long tails. It's the same as an RS-2. If you notice Rim's traditional RS-2 nymph tie, he uses a long fibbet tail as well. Same concept here. Not anatomically correct but the long fibbet tail seems to be a good trigger....works real well on my home rivers. Who knows, fish eat some weird lookin' stuff...a look in my flybox is a testament to that!

  7. Dubb do you ever come my why? The Blue & dream stream are bang'n right now hows the fork? and their was a cat on here from Basalt that went by flytyer5150, do you know eachother? he said his familly owned some of the frying pan, I have fished private water on Taylor Creek and would love to hit some private on the pan

When I lived in Denver, I used to come to summit and fish the blue all the time...at least once a week. It's been a while though. I love the river. We've been trying to put together a little Utah trip together for a while. Probably will happen next spring I assume. I'm not familiar with flytyer5150 but would be happy to meet up. Especially with the private pan water :)

We should get together and snag some.

  8. Welcome Dubb, You barely missed an Itsy Bitsy swap contest. I am a CO Hatchling that migrated one state West. Have some fun, check out the patterns DB and the upcoming Tyer of the year contest. All fun.

    Cheers, Futzer.

Good to be here Futzer. The Itsy Bitsy swap would have been right up my alley. I mainly tie size 18-22 nymphs these days (trout are gettin picky in my neck of the woods).

There is an astounding amount of talent and information here. I've learned quite a bit already. Thank you for the warm

    welcome.

  9. Welcome aboard. :D

Nice flies they'll work a treat, now keep em coming so you can shake that Baitfisherman title ;)

I tie a very similar nymph for sight fishing NZ's south island between 16-20# with a matt black tungsten bead.

Ahh yes, many more to come. Thanks for the words of encouragement Mr. Fischa. BTW, enjoy the upcoming down unda summer. I'm gonna be staring at gobs of snow and midges for the next 6 months :)
