  1. Thanks for positive feedback everyone. Here's another view. James
  2. Here's a new idea I had. You know, one of those 'What if...?' moments. My pal, the esteemed and venerable Davie McPhail aka peatyman, suggested I share it on here. The fly is tied on the shank of a cotton bud - I just wanted to practise without wasting hooks because I'm Scottish and I'm tight. Still working on ways to add a hook once tied! Let me know what you think. Be gentle, it's still a work in progress. Or have a look at my site, www.finesseflytying.co.uk - don't forget to sign the guestbook! :yahoo:
  3. Hi Folks, Thanks for all the kind remarks regarding my patterns. I wish I had the skill of Logan, Whillock, Mead etc and the time to tie something truly realistic. I'm always amazed at the the likes of Graham on the forum and laterly uffepuffe, who seem to tie realistics at the drop of a hat. I love reading the correspondence and free advice these guys have to offer. I'll post some more patterns soon but I don't know if I'm on the correct site ? As I said before, my patterns are fishing flies. I also would like to mention the Dale Beamish CD. These are fantastic instructions for anyone new to tying impessionistic patterns along the same lines as the UK flytyer Steve Thornton but with Dale's own view of Canadian insects and unique insight into tying. I really do do recommend Steve's and Dale's Cds. I also received an email from Paul Whillock after purchasing his realistic wings. I sent Paul the article on the Scurr and tying instructions. Who knows what the genius of Whillock will come up with! I'm also looking forward to his new book and CDs. Check out his website and order a copy and if you can afford it buy a fly and be prepared to be flabbergasted. It's been a pleasure sharing patterns with some of the world's best flytyers. Thanks for taking the time to look at my patterns. The pleasure and the privilege were mine. James
  4. Thanks for your encouragement Graham. I enjoy the challenge of trying to make realistic but fishable flies while railing against the limitations it places upon me. How many times have you found the perfect material then realised it's not robust enough to be fished? It's frustrating, but then that's what makes the design brief so exacting and a satisfactory end result so rewarding, especially when I'm retrieving it from the jaws of a trout or grayling. Keep pushing back the boundaries! James
  5. Dale, just received your wingbuds and the set of CDs - you must be really proud of yourself. The wingbuds are truly poptastic and I can't wait to try out the CDs. Thanks again for a prompt and efficient service. Tight threads James
  6. Hello Uffepuffe! Really impressed by your adult caddis flies. If you contact me via email I'll send you some DermaVellum free of charge. This is a tough, waterproof material which can be run through a laser printer to produce some poptastic results. James PS Thanks for the comments on my own flies. All the best.
  7. Thanks for the moraleboost, grayling lover. It's nice to know people like what I'm doing. As far as Steve's wingbuds go, they are perfect for Stoneclingers I use them myself. The reason I devoloped my own was because I couldnt wait any longer for Steve to produce his .Im very impatient, I was on the phone constantly. Incidentally, Steve is a great guy and Ive been dealing with him since 1998 He is always encouraging with help and advice and is a great flytyer period!!!!!My wingbuds are designed from actual insect pictures then converted onto line drawings which I can colour to match the hatch to cover various species found in the uk. Dale Beamish also has a range of very similar products which Ive ordered myself stonefly, mayfly etc. I ordered them two weeks ago along with his cds and tying instructions i cant wait to try them(you can never have enough wingbuds)but you could try and produce your own. Also Graham on the forum has got a fantastic range of buds, you should contact him - he's a gem of a guy and a superb flytyer. Aloso check out Paul Whillock site it will blow your mind!!!!!!! But I would have to agree with Dale. Bill Logan ties the most realistic flies in the world Genius. All my flies are fishing flies, like Steve Thornton's and Ollie Edwards'.
  8. Hi Graham, glad you liked The Scurr and impressed you found me on www.rackelhanen.se I've also got work on www.graylinghunter.co.uk If you're looking for Flexile, look no further! I'm in the process of setting up a website selling Finesse Flytying products, some unique and really tasty products, including narrow gauge Flexile and wingbuds from the True to Life range. The range consists of alder, baetis, greendrake, heptagenid, stonefly (moulted) , stonefly (mature) and beetle, although not all are yet available to the general public. Early trials for all species are going well. If you have a look at the wingbuds available from Steve Thornton at Virtual Nymph, you'll see they have been produced from line drawings, where the Finesse brand originate from photographs of actual insects. The difference is incredible and boy, do the fish love them! If you email me at [email protected] I can give you details of price and availability. Thanks for your interest- I was most impressed by your own tying! James
