Strange input from Blackfoots. I have fished the SJ for 18 years, 2/3 time each year and have never had a bad experience. In response to several postings above:
1. yes lodging is now an issue since Abe's closed and Fisheads took the opportunity to dramatically raise their rates (it their business, if that model works for them so be it). However there are several ways to handle it. 1 - do a Vrbo; we have had good success w/ that; 2 - the Verandas Lodge, owned by Abe's son, is superior. $100/person, min of 3 people/3 nights. With kitchen, etc very cost effective. Finally 3 - stay in Durango, 45 min drive to the water's edge. I stay there when I bring the wife.
2. The fishing has remained exceptional. It is a very technical fishery. That's what's fun. Fish everywhere, but often laughing at one's efforts to catch.
3. location is easy; not sure what Blackfoots' issues were; one can fly into Durango and then a 45 min drive. We drive from Phoenix 2/3 times/year. Yes, Navajo Dam is not Vegas (although Las Vegas de San Juan, is just down the road :)
4. HOWEVER, if Blackfoots. name "Bait fisherman" is indicative of his efforts, well - 'nuff said.
