silvermallard 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2004 I'm using partridge hurl. A local shop owner recommends starling. When tying size 18-22 soft hackle midge emergers, a lot of folks find it difficult to find short enough hackle fibers around here. A local expert just taught me how to "fudge" them when the fibers are too long, but I'm wondering if anyone else has found something they use that can be traditionally wrapped. willie 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2004 I would go with the guy at the fly shop. I use starling feathers for my midges and it works fine. You can use them and still wrap the feather the traditonally way, although it dosen't really matter as long as it looks like a midge.
HFT 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2004 I used to use starling too,but now the whiting capes give me a variety of color and easier to use.
