As a teenager, I fished the river Tay and its tributaries, around the town of Dunkeld, the birthplace of this pattern. I believe it is a very early pattern and that it was quite quickly 'morphed' into the more simple trout/sea trout pattern still in use today (it's even found it's way into stillwater applications).
