edvan22 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good video or web tutorial on the thompson whip finisher. I am getting back into fly tying and would like to start using this tool I have always had but never knew how to use. I have found a million videos etc for the other style tool but nothing on the thompson. Thanks! ED
Guest Report post Posted September 9, 2004 Did you try the Thompson web site? I used to have one of those, but got rid of it because a Matarelli is easier to use. I never could figure it out either.

Guest Report post Posted September 10, 2004 You can also go to Derek Porters Tie one on site. It shows the Thompson and Materelli in animated tutorials which are both great Derek Porters web site Hope this helps Fatman
jared 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2004 Not exactly what you're looking for, but I'd dump the Thompson and buy a Matarelli..... -J
JarrodRuggles 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2004 Go to troutflies.com and visit the tuteral section and there will be a whip finish. It has slow motion zoom etc.
boba 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2004 You don't really need a tool unless you need to very precisely lay in one thread exactly next to the other for a really small or an exhibition fly. If you don't use the tool, most people (which included me when I started) find it necessary to have someone show them in person. Whip finishing isn't really hard, but it sure is hard if you don't have someone to help you. The Materelli directions on paper are pretty clear, and I figured out how to do it with that tool. I didn't figure out the Thompson directions until after I learned to do it by hand. The Borgers directions are pretty clear in their short movie at: <http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/jbwhip/>
