Dragonfly Entomology

Recommended Posts

Great start. I’ve parsed the following info from the original post so it can be seen all together.

Taxonomic info:

- Phylum: Arthropoda

- Class: Insecta

- Order: Odonata

- Sub Order: Anisoptera (rather than Epiproctophora and Zygoptera)

- Family or river specimen: Aeshnidae

- Genus of river specimen: Boyeria

- Family of lake specimen: ???

- Genus of lake specimen: ???

Identification keys:

- How do you tell if these are dragonfly or damselfly nymphs?

- Dragonfly nymphs are short and fat.

- Damselfly nymphs are long and skinny.

- Adult dragonflies rest with their wings out at the sides and damselflies rest with their wings folded on their back.

- Pujic's lake dweller has a conspicuous light blotch on top of its abdomen

- Pujic's lake dweller has what on its wingpad???

Habitat and behavior:

- Dragonflies are some of the best predators in the insect world.

- They use to eat little shrimps, may flies nymphs, and such insects.

- They creep at the bottom between the vegetation and catch their game, other little nymphs.

- Live in their nymphal (larval) stage for as long as 4 years, depending on species

Miscellaneous:

- We use them to catch chub, trout, even barbel and vimba.

I’ll bet there are others of you with information about Dragonflies, maybe even the ones in Pujic’s photos. Also, there is no rule against doing a little research on the internet. It will increase your knowledge, and you can share what you discover with the rest of us.
